I'm suprised no one has made a thread about this movie considering I've heard the directors name mentioned around the site alot. I know there's one person on here that is probably as big of a fan as I am if not more so I'm sure I'll get at least one response. So here's the deal for the new M. NIGHT SHYAMALAN MOVIE!

Fate won’t let you hide forever.

Cleveland Heep (Paul Giamatti) has been quietly trying to disappear among the burned –out lightbulbs and broken appliances of the Voce apartment complex. But on the night that irrevocably changed his life, Cleveland finds someone else hiding the mundane routine of the modest building – a mysterious young woman named Story (Bryce Dallas Howard) who has been living in the passageways beneath the building’s swimming pool.

Cleveland discovers that Story is actually a "Narf" – a nymph-like character from an epic bedtime story who is being stalked by vicious creatures determined to prevent her from making the treacherous journey from out world back to hers. Story’s unique powers of perception reveal the fates of Cleveland’s fellow tenants, whose destinies are tied directly to her own, and they must work together to decipher a series of codes that will unlock the pathway to her freedom.

But the window of opportunity for Story to return home is closing rapidly, and the tenants are putting their own lives at great risk to help her. Cleveland will have to face the demons that have followed him to the cove – and the other tenants must seize the specials powers that Story has brought out in them – if they hope to succeed in their daring and dangerous quest to save her world...and ours.

Okay, so I for one am intrigued to see this film. I know alot of people hated the villege and signs and I love every movie. He's getting better and better with each one so hopefully this one will be great.

look carefully at the picture in the link below, there's definetly an eye in there and I'm sure M. Night did it on purpose. Regardless of what you think of his movies he is one hell of a director and always provides amazing visuals

Well symalan manages to create chilling concepts. Despite the village's twist which tainted my feelings of fear earlier in the moive, he can create atmopsheres which leave you uneasy all the time. His adds leave you with a lot to question and your not quite sure what to expect.

The teaser add for lady in the water was genious i thought. Adding his name at the end along with some chilling tunes. Could be good.

I loved the trailer ... it was elegant and the music was great. I really want to see this. Bryce Dallas Howard was so great in the Village and, of course, Paul Giamatti.

Yeah, I loved the trailer too. It was a very brief trailer and when his name finally appeared it changed the whole concept of what you just saw. To me it looked like an indie flick and you couldn't really tell what it was about then boom... M. Night Shyamalan pops up. I had been tracking it for months before the trailer though but still, it made me want to see it more.

I watched the trailer w/o knowing mister Night was attached to it, I thought maybe a good movie to view with my mum, but afterwards I was eager to know who the hell is helming this because it looked brilliant.

Big fan. Wasn't sure about this one, he seemed to have difficulty landing it at a studio. BUT, saying that and seeing the trailer, plot summary - I think it's going to be another good one.

yeah i think the difficulty with the studio was because of the critical backlash the village brought him
his next project was originally going to be an adaption of life of pi (absolutely amazing book by the way) but i guess he decided to do his own thing instead of directing someones elses script which was what alot of people suggested
i dont know if thats the reason for the different studio but its my guess

Yeah. There was huge critical backlash with The Village. I still think it's a brilliantly filmed and acted movie. Yeah, the premise can be thought of as cheating (the ending), but as a standalone movie - I feel it's fantastic.

The marketing of The Village did not help one bit. They marketed it as a horror movie - which it isn't at all. That also let a lot of viewers down.

yeah i aqree that the marketing was bad but i also enjoyed the film, thats just part of my theory as to why hes now with warner bros and not disney

Hate to disappoint everyone but I'm not a big fan of M. Night Shyamalan. With the exception of The Sixth Sense (which, I hate to admit, cost me a few nights of sleep after my first viewing), I haven't really cared for his films. I find them to be too passive for the kind of themes they deal with, even in comparison to films like The Ring and The Skeleton Key.

The twist endings are an issue for me as well. I think Shyamalan has been too concerned with making films with twist endings to think of twists that are actually good. The twist in Signs was pretty lame but the twist in The Village was downright infuriating (the first twist, not the second). I haven't seen Unbreakable.

This looks like it'll be pretty boring IMO. The fact that the film lacks a threat doesn't help either as suspense is one thing Shyamalan does well but has little use in a story like this.

I'll back you up, James.  "Sixth Sense" kicked all kinds of ass, but I'm afraid the M-man has yet to come within spitting distance of that film with his follow-ups.

Yeah, I saw "Unbreakable" -- and left the theater with a resounding, "Eh."  "Signs" was silly, and "The Village" actually pissed me off.

I'll go see this, too, however, as I am a complete sucker for that kind of stuff.  But I ain't holding my breath, I'll tell you that.

My opinion is the opposite of bert and james I guess as I honestly think he is getting better and better with each movie. As for the twists, I think that's just his style of stories and he doesn't write to expectations like alot of people say. I agree that signs in retrospect does have some plot holes that may make it appear 'silly' but the first time I veiwed it I thought it was amazing and the story issues didn't detract from the movie at all. They still don't know and in my own mind I have explanations for all of them so that they don't bother me.

And as for the village, I enjoyed the whole plot of that too. But bert, I'm sure that majority of people agree with you and were pissed off by the ending but I felt it wasn't really a twist but more of a neccesity to tell the story that was told. I think the basic concept was determined first and then he just decided that the revelation would work best at the end.

In response to James, I agree this film will be alot different. I imagine it'll be slower paced, maybe even like his first film "Wide Awake" if anyone has seen that. It's alot different to all his recent movies. Secondly, I read online that this is rated PG which is also a big change. As for the threat, I think M. Night will make sure that we are drawn into the nymph's struggle and feel whatever threat she has to make it past.

And to the opposite of bert, I really cannot wait for this one. I found it online months ago and I will see it the first showing I can the day it comes out to stop any one spoling the plot.

I loved Unbreakable, it was the superhero film that wasn't trying to be something special like say Spiderman in which was an OK film but had some of the worst CG/Human blends ever unless you go back to the older films which it was even worse.

But I like Bruce Willis so I'm stuck to liking most of his work from Mercury Rising to 12 Monkeys to Sin City and even Hostage. I forgot Die Hard 1,2 and 3 plus many others but the fact remains I find the guy entertaining.

Add him in any crappy film and I'll still hate the film but say "Hey, was Bruce not great in this or what?" like always he probably would be.

I thought the trailer for this was stupid. It didn't explain anything. It was like they gave the film to a kid with Microsoft Movie Maker and said "All you got to do is drag and drop..." and then left. It's lame! Even if the movie'll be good, It think they should do a better job with stuff like this.

I'm going to have to take back what I said about the film not having a threat, having realized that Paul Giamatti has to face the demons after the "Narf." The few sites I've looked at mentioning the film seem to leave out this little detail.

Still... not interested.

I don't think it is a secret that I am a huge fan of M. Night.  If it were not for this man's vision and style I would not be on this board now.  I've have never seen a director with a distinct vision that can produce so much emotion into his movies.  Some of the most powerful moments in his movies are ones with little dialouge and little action.  It is a just a sense of the character's reactions and the way he directs to convey this.

I also want to speak a little on the twists.  Most people dispise M. Night because they feel he puts a twist into each of his films to draw an audience and to get the same results that The Sixth Sense did.  Those who read his interviews know this isn't always true.  The thing about his movies are the fact this his characters are always flawed and not in the same way that most movies are.  The heroes in his story never fully "win" or come out on top.  There is alwasy another force that has had its hand in the story the entire time and this sense of unknowning is what makes him so unique.  While watching his movies you never fully know who everyone is, what their motives are, and if they can be trusted.  When the movie is finally over you can piece together the puzzle in his stories and everything comes together to make sense.  This mirrors a lot of what happens in our real lives.

By the way, Lady In the Water looks amazing.  Can't wait.    

I knew you were a fellow M. Night fan. He is actually what got me into screen writing to. I agree with you on everything that you've said. He takes extraordinary situations and makes them seem ordinary in a way that no one else can. As for the twists, I don't think he strives to put them in there. His stories always have themes and the twists support them. None of them have twists just for the sake of it despite what some people say about the village.

As for the trailer and the comment that it wasn't very good, I disagree. It shows a man doing mundane apartment jobs, looks to be lonely, is a writer, and then one day finds 'something' that obviously isn't human in is pool. I'm glad it didn't give away any more than that. It did just enough to get intriguied. And of course, for those that didn't know about the movie before hand, his name pops up at the end to grab peoples attention, and the times I saw the trailer at the movies, it definetly worked.

To the ImagiNation, I am glad I found a fellow M. Night fan that can appreciate the movies on the same level as me. In july we'll have some interesting discussions about this flick

I tried watching the trailer but it wouldn't work, so I got angry, said a curse word, and gave up.  I'll wait for the TV spot I guess.

I just read the review for an apparent test screening of this movie and it wasn't very positive at all... i skimmed over it to avoid spoilers but basically what the reviewer said was that "if you hated the village then you'll hate this" as like the village it is not as much of a thriller as the sixth sense and signs were. Secondly the script left a lot to be desired (plot holes, awkward or unfunny dialogue etc.). The only positive thing was that the screening was two and a half hours long which means the movie will probably get cut down considerably and whoever wrote the review thought that'd help with clarifying somethings that were unclear or unecessary.

Postings on IMDB have already began discussing the review and some think it's too early for a test screening to have gone on but I kind of belief it. They were done filming in october. I enjoyed the village so I still have my hopes up for this one but judging by what other people have said this could be bad for M. Night if it's similar in style to that.

EDIT: I just checked the link now and apparently the review is gone. Whoever wrote it asked for it to be taken down and he said that he saw the movie at a personal "friends and family" screening and the review wasn't supposed to be released. HMMMM, now I really don't know if it was real or not. I wish I had saved the article to show you guys but I didn't. If anyone would be interested to know any exact details I guess you could PM me and I'll tell you but like I said, I skipped over the major spoilers.

I just saw the new trailer.  looks a lot better than I thought, more of a monster movie, I just hope the monsters are real this time, not like the village!

The Village did really upset me. I was on the edge of my seat until I saw that it was a scare tactic to scare the citizens from leaving. This movie probably will be another great film.
