I don't know why, but I've got a feeling this is going to be great. Jaden Smith is a very talented young actor and it's nice to see Jackie Chan not hiding his age.
No no no no no - this is gonna suck ASS all over the place. Jaden Smith? What is he, like, 6 or something? They should call it The Karate Toddler.
While the original was one huge pile of melted Mozzarella, it was a classic teen-flick that fit its time. Man, you had everyone doing the crane kick after seeing that one (and the crane kick is about the most stupid thing I've ever seen - but it rocked, go figure).
This one, mark my words, will suck - it'll make a ton of money of course but it won't hide the fact that it'll be an abomination at worst and a fucking atrocity at best.

I never cared for the original Karate Kid, but it does have several good things about it. The remake looks really bad. And I know it is wrong to say that Jaden Smith is a bad actor, because he is a kid and all, but he is not even close to a talented actor. The only reason he has starring roles in films is because of his dad, Will Smith.
Jackie Chan, who I usually like, does not look very good in the remake at all. No one can replace Pat Morita as Mr. Miyagi, especially Jackie Chan.
Overall, I am going to skip it. It will probably do well at the box office, but it will receive destructive reviews.
Hollywood could fuck up an ice cream cone... But here they've really upped the stakes. They've not only fucked it up, they took a shit on it too.
What made the original so good was how timeless it was. That movie could have, in all honesty, been set in the 50's or the 60's. It didn't really matter what era it was in because the story is what made it so good. The characters were so memorable and Ralph Machcio was such a believable guy... The love story here is something the remake cannot touch the original because of the age gap in which they are cast. I don't care about Jaden Smith, he's not of interest to me. I don't like his father and I don't like Chan... What I do know is that nothing will compare to the original one. Nothing.
It, to me, is one of the best screenplays I've ever read. When people say how do you write a good screenplay... I tell them to read Karate Kid & Magnolia. I've actually learned from both. Read them. Understand what makes them so good.
