Ahh, good ol' Quentin. Irony is that if Tarantino was an 'unproduced' nobody submitting his scripts to SS, he'd be called a hack by some of the more short-sighted members of the community.
I have a love/hate relationship with the guy's work. It always annoys me when I'm watching an old film and I see something that he "paid homage to", that most people give him credit for. But still, his films are usually entertaining; when it's not four people sitting around a table as the camera spins for ten minutes ( ::coughdeathproofcough:: ) .
At the time I found his first two movies really refreshing. His more recent output, not so much.
Personally, I would rather watch the films he has encyclopediac knowledge of rather than the 'homages' he puts together.

I don't get that aspect of it. I prefer watching successful B-movie makers try to make something good with nothing, rather than successful Hollywood types trying to make something knowingly bad with everything.
I watched Hobo with a Shotgun recently, and while I'm fully aware that the young filmakers got their opportunity due to Grindhouse -- it was a much better example of an entertaining Exploitation riff.

I deleted an earlier post from myself because I decided that it's a bot rich for someone like me to criticise Tarantino at my stage of career. That said, I agre with everything you're saying.
There's a certain "fakeness" that's crept into his work since Jackie Brown. The films he's paying homage to were cheap affairs. Maybe they couldn't afford the best actors, or whatever. The little things like stroking the beard that he copies in Kill Bill..they are charming in films where the actors aren't at the top of the game, when it's a world famous star there's just an element of sheer naffness that's hard to overlook.

Meh. I'm looking forward to this. I think I have reasonable expectations for Tarantino films at this point. They're always going to have annoying things in them. Tarantino's personality is annoying. It's only natural. I also think it's laughable to suggest Tarantino's got anything genuine to say about racism. His Achille's heel is his inability to produce anything of real substance. Even if he gets close, he'll spin it around and turn it into a joke. Even in Bastards, he did.
Nevertheless, I'm sure it'll be entertaining. I'm excited to see Waltz back and to see what Tarantino pulls out of his hat as far as racist Southern slave owners.

Indeed, he might.
I don't know. He's a good actor but might be a little too wholesome for a Tarantino film. Tarantino's casting has always featured some element of unexpected but this feels just a little too left field to me. It's also way early in the game and both Death Proof and Basterds had some serious casting shake-ups over the course of their development.
If Will Smith does get cast, I'd expect Tarantino to be able to retire in style. A project like that would rake in the cash.
Tarantino has proved he can work with actors of varying skills and reputations. Smith proved he's got some chops with excellent performances in Pursuit and Seven Pounds. Both of these guys have the talent and adaptability to do something good on this project, if they do pair up. Perhaps it'll lead to QT and Cruise finally getting together.
I have to disagree with your comment there Rick (from what JB quoted) - QT, while yet to put something out with true heart (and I mentioned that in my IB review), has moved onto another level with IB. In a revealing interview, he said how IB was his response to PTA who had raised the bar with There Will Be Blood. QT's body of work can stand up to any of the top directors from the last 20 or so years. It has its own distinct flavour and has rightly achieved acclaim from both critics and audiences. Criticism of QT is fair enough but my own opinion is that it often comes from artistic jealousy - he's an enclyopedia of film and he uses this to craft marvellous films that stand apart. The lazy criticism that he simply rehashes others' work and lacks the raw talent to develop his own ideas is flimsy at best, IMO.
In a surprisingly lack of integrity on the part of management, IMDB has already posted a pretty hefty prospective cast for the film. It seems rumors, founded or unfounded, are rolling in for this one, including one that Christ Tucker could be up for the title role. *shudders*
I'm pretty surprised by this, as the character Calvin Candie reads as much older in the script. In fact I'm sure at one point during a dinner scene he even says something about being the oldest person at the table.
I'm actually not sure that Smith would consider the role, even though I'm sure most actors would jump at the chance to work with Quentin. This particular script, or what I've read about it anyway, sounds especially nasty, even for Tarantino. You can only make so much fun with rape and slave auctioning.

The article seems to suggest Waltz and DiCaprio are confirmed as well but language such as "appears to be..." is irritating and adds doubt where there shouldn't be any.
Still, it's news. Seems to be coming in fast too.
On a side note, IMDB seems to be full of shit and just posting whatever rumors happen to pop up on the official page. Of course, rumored casting is posted from time to time but when they throw up three actors up for the same role, it just looks sloppy.
I have, actually. I enjoyed it, more or less, even Tarantino's goofy cameo (I can't believe the old guy in the wheelchair was actually him). Miike action silliness is fine by me.
I've yet to see the original Django. It's on my Netflix Instant Que. I'll probably check it out either tonight or tomorrow. I'd be interested to see how both Miike's and Tarantino's films play off the original story.
On a side note, I recently saw Mandigo and Drum, which are apparently chief amongst the film's influences. That, combined with what I've read about the script... I don't know. At this point, I think it's going to be nuts, without question. But if people don't "get" this one, I think it could be a serious blow to the careers of everyone involved. I say this in regards to the film's racial content.
Honestly, I'm a little bummed. I thought this could be a rejuvenating film for Costner. Much like, Travolta in Pulp Fiction and Pam Grier in Jackie Brown. When Costner gets evil, he's quite good on the screen.
I think Costner's casting was a lot more unconventional and if executed right, I think it could've been a much more intense and interesting performance, based on the character description.
That said, Russell is much more suited for this type of material yet, as of late, so seldom involves himself in it. So it's not quite a situation of seeing an actor return to the well, so to speak. You said it yourself. He'll kill it.
I also like the "best of Tarantino" casting that seems to be going on here. Waltz, Jackson and Russell in the same film will be a treat to say the least.

All this casting news is pure gold. But there's still that elephant in the room for me, Django. Jamie Foxx. That guy is super hit or miss for me. Even the five minutes he was in Horrible Bosses was loathsome for me. But I dug him in Collateral, when he's not the hero, I can connect with him.

Yes, I have seen it. No, there is no established connection in the draft I read. Django Unchained in an American "Southern" period piece. And IMO, Miike's film was a flat out bore.

I finally got to see the original Django. So far, nothing I've read about the Tarantino film bares even the slightest resemblance to the Franco Nero film. I think Tarantino just wanted to use the name (and possibly the theme song).
Also, Kerry Washington confirmed as Django's wife, Broomhilda. Joseph Gordon-Levitt in talks for an undisclosed role.

This seems to be getting more and more true with each casting addition. Foxx is constantly being overshadowed and if Gordon-Levitt gets added, he might just be outright eclipsed.
Michael Kenneth Williams seems to be rumored as part of the cast. Perhaps he might've made a better lead than Fox. He's a better actor and his career seems to be on the rise while Fox's has more or less plateaued for the time being. Django might've been an opportune breakthrough role for him. Given the film's Mandingo influence though, I suspect Fox will be beating him to a pulp at some point instead. Oh well.
That's it! I'm hooked! I'm officially hyped to maximum capacity and borderline skepticism-free... but I wouldn't object if Fox dropped out and was replaced by Michael K. Williams.

Russell's character has been written out of the script with an indefinite chunk of his dialogue combined with the character, Billy Crash, played by Walter Goggins (Deadwood).
I'm seriously bummed. That's some considerable talent that's dropped out. Michael K Williams has also been out for a while. Not that he had a starring role or anything but he was probably my favorite (prospective) cast member next to Christoph Waltz.

Super unusual to have so many people drop during production! I can see before, like Levitt and Hill, but still. It's damn peculiar. Levitt, Costner, Russell, Cohen and Jonah Hill dropped early on. Since when do people say no to Quentin? Weird.

Anyway, I'm particularly bummed about Russell's departure. I hear Goggins and his respective character both have the chops to "absorb" Russell's role and I guess if you haven't read the script, you wouldn't be able to tell which dialogue originally belonged to what character. But over the past year, I've been lead to believe that this film would include Russell as an evil slave trainer and as such, one of three central villains. I can still see it in my head quite vividly and have grown accustomed to the idea. I'm afraid Tarantino may have set a ceiling that, unforeseen circumstances or not, he may not be able to reach now.
On the other hand, the dropouts seem akin to complications most average directors have to face at one point or another, if not regularly. Tarantino, as a director who seems to have always gotten what he's wanted, might have an interesting opportunity to show his chops in the face of adversity. I'm honestly impressed with the swiftness he's been able to resolve the Russell issue.

Looks awesome. Glad to see pretty much the entire cast (save Kerry Washington, of course) gets to rock some gnarly facial hair. DiCaprio, as brief as his appearance is, looks like he could deliver a really fun performance.
I was actually really underwhelmed by the trailer. That said, with the exception of the Grindhouse trailer (which wasn't fully his), trailers for Tarantino movies never seem to grab me.
Tarantino trailers never do much for me. I am excited for this film, though, as Tarantino usually provides a good film. I just wish Kurt Russell had remained with the cast. As it sounded, his character of Ace Woody, wasn't necessarily important to the story as parts of that character were shifted to Walton Goggins' character. Anyway, I will be in line and hoping that this is a good film.
