Just watched the trailer for this and honestly, this looks amazing. But who knows, trailers are very misleading.



Anyway, I looked around the internet and sure enough, found the script. Which has to be one of the most poorly written scripts that have ever sold on the market... Worse than the amateur scripts posted here.

For the first scene, there is only one description.

"A young man, FREDDIE SUTTON (early 20s) speaks to a DOCTOR" Then three and a half pages of only dialogue and then we cut to an elevator...

Yup, the trailers certainly look intriguing. I recently read his There Will Be Blood script and thought it was a great read with some interesting difference between it and the finished film. Although, it’s hard to have an impartial judgment on a script's quality when you've seen the film and know how amazing it was.

As for your opinions on the script for The Master, what's wrong with 3 and a half pages of dialogue to open a film? Who said that's a bad thing? Pulp fiction starts with 6 pages of dialogue and it’s widely considered to be a modern classic.

Plus, I don't think his script would have "sold on the market" in the traditional sense.

Oh, you must've mistook what I wrote. What I meant was, there wasn't a proper description in there, or any description really. Nothing wrong with three pages of dialogue, although I wouldn't take pride in not bothering to even write what my main character is wearing. Maybe I have the first first draft.

Very true but the studio would still have to read it I'd assume. My bad on that part, noticed that he wrote it himself.

I loved Magnolia, my favourite film from Anderson. I'm still yet to watch There Will be Blood but I hear the acting is top notch.

Yeah, I think you have to judge a script differently from a technical standpoint when they come from a working, proven filmmaker who will be directing the material themselves. They simply don't have to follow the rules the way non established writers do and often write in an esoteric, short hand style, breaking said rules at will.

Ya Magnolia is a masterpiece and give TWBB a second watch if it jars you after the first viewing...then you'll want to give it a third. I would say all of Anderson's five features thus far are brilliant. In my books, he’s up there with some of the best American Filmmakers of the last 20 years regardless of his relatively sparse output.

So yes, bring on The Master!

As far as I'm concerned, the script could be written in urine on three napkins taped on the back of Anderson's car.

The movies he makes are so good.

I'm always up for a P.T. Anderson film.
And I imagine he didn't care what the script looked like.
This is an indie funded film that the Weinsteins later picked up.
Even those guys prolly don't tell Mr. Anderson how to write his scripts! LOL.

Yeah, the Weinsteins are notorious for 11th hour awards season schedule shuffling.
The season typically starts in October, and they moved back Brad Pitt's new one.
It's likely that Anderson doesn't want to do a ton of festival circuit stuff, or...
They moved it forward because the film is not that good. I hope the former.

Having re-watched Boogie Nights and Magnolia recently, my excitement for this film has about quadrupled. I always forget how much I love Anderson's work until I re-watch them. In my opinion, P.T. Anderson is the best working filmmaker on the planet. He has my complete, undying faith and devotion.

Trailers look amazing. I love the cast, love the idea of the film. Can't wait.

Just ran across this, I think I'm in love.

I'm looking forward to seeing this.  (But I think because I'm more of a Phillip Seymour Hoffman fan than anything, and Joaquin, also.

I liked Magnolia and There Will Be Blood a lot.  But I have to admit, Punch Drunk Love is definately in my Top 10 Worst Movies of all time.  I just can't get into that one.  'The Master' however, looks like it has potential to be my favorite Anderson film.

Like people have already mentioned. Anderson is writing for himself, not for studios here. I read the script and several times he doesn't even write out dialogue. Instead, he summarizes the general idea of the conversation. I think the script is great, though I know I read an earlier draft. Do you know how reent yours is? I wouldn't be surprised if we were reading unfinished versions of the script.

Aside from that, I don't think describing your character's attire is always integral to the movie. Sometimes it helps, but other times you don't need it.

I'm actually not sure but it's definitely not a final draft as it's still called "Untitled Scientology Project". The script looked finished as I skimmed through it. PM me if you'd like the copy I have.

This is probably the first time I've ever followed the teaser trailers in the lead up to a film as I usually like to go in blindsided with just the basic premise. In this case though my curiosity and anticipation has gotten the better of me.

However, I’m still relatively clueless in regards what's it’s actually about except for the basic premise, yet the trailers have really got me excited i.e. they’ve done their job.

Which I love and cherish in an age of stupendously stupid revealing trailers! They should slap a big, flashing, red “SPOILER ALERT” warning at the start of those da?ned things
