I went all the way with my first 2 full lenght scripts, done my rewrites and now.. I wanna do something for my friends! They're messing with my head almost every single day about this, and i finally decided to do it! However, i don't really know how to approach this.
I'm an oldie in Lineage and WoW online games, and i wanna write a short script about my clan's greatest days. I could use a narration type of script for these if i had any videos to go along. But i have not. It's just the stories. It looks so easy to write a novel for example, but i cannot see it happening a short movie afterwards. Let's say that we can find someone to produce it, how would you approach this? a documentary type of interviews is the only way that comes to mind. Any thoughts?

I’ve seen plenty of cases where footage was staged inside the game environment, but recreating epic battles and the like is probably not feasible.

If you want to go the interview and stock footage route (which is tough to keep interesting for anyone not directly involved), you might go with the conceit that the players and avatars get interviewed separately. You’d need some folks who can do the avatars’ voices, would seem cheesy if the players voiced their own avatars. Especially if they have differences of opinion about some events.

“‘Not a big deal,’ he says. Have you ever respawned? It hurts like hell!”

Feature-length scripts:
Who Wants to Be a Princess? (Family)
Glass House (Horror anthology)

TV pilots:
"Kord" (Fantasy)
"Mal Suerte" (Superhero)

So, game is on.

We've got ourselves an expert in photos and videos, who volunteered to join our project (does weddings and such). So there goes the tricky part considering the equipment.

As FrankM suggested, we'll go the interview way. I will narrate the basics, then an interview with a fellow player will follow, then I'll add my point of view on his story ('especially if they have differences of opinion about some events' marks the spot!).

The question/debate atm however is this. I have collected very few ingame footage (fraps video) but lots of screenshots from those moments, so.. would it be wise  to use just some videos and narrating what is happening and then just photos for everything else, or just use the screenshots (huge database) the whole time, which are also easier to describe/narrate? We are talking about animation narration after all, not real life footage.

This is meant to be a comedy documentary, gloryfing+mocking those moments of the past...

Any other tips or ideas to consider regarding directing this?

Is there any kind of such a documentary with anime narration over images out there?

Best of luck on your project.

I think using mostly photos would work, especially if this is really only intended for Friends and Family. Keep an eye out for before-and-unexpected-after image pairs, since they'll add to the comedy element.

No interviewing the avatars, then?

By avatars, you mean the actual people behind their ingame characters? If yes, then sure, these are the people I will be interviewing.

There will be a super with his ingame name and then... his face answering 2-3 questions.

If you mean something else, please let me know.

So the player is the human being. The avatar is the on-screen graphics that represent the player in the game world.

So, if you were playing a Lara Croft title, you would be the player and the avatar would look like Lara Croft.

"Interviewing" an avatar would just mean getting a video of the avatar more or less standing/sitting somewhere. Bonus points if you can make its lips move when its time to speak.

Oh, got it. Well, don't know if that's doable, but if anyone refuses to show his face I will probably try this...
