Another reviewer inspired me to track down this movie. Zombie Doom was the only movie available on Netflix from German splatter director Andreas Schnaas, creator of the "Violent Shit" trilogy (Zombie Doom is entry #3). I wasn't expecting much but, in the end, I was pleasantly surprised.
The plot of Zombie Doom is as follows. Three unsuspecting victims are stranded on an island and captured by a clan of sadistic killers, led by Karl Jr. (Andreas Schnaas himself), all of which wearing metal face plates that look like medieval knight's helmets. One of the victims is killed and the other two are released on the island to be hunted down like game by the clan. The two victims join forces with an ex-clansman and try to fight back. Along the way, the face zombies and the Black Ninjas.
The entire movie is shot sloppily on a camcorder. The whole thing feels like it was shot in someone's backyard. Here enlies the movie's charm. The whole thing looks so cheap, it's hilarious and entertaining to watch. The dialogue is so rediculous in going out of its way to be offensive that you can't help but crack up (some of the lines include "fuck my nephew, he should die" and "I'm so sick, I could puke... buckets.") It's almost like watching one of the bad horror scripts posted on this very site being brought to life (e.g. The Cabin). The dubbing is also hilariously bad. There are many instances where people will be talking and there isn't any dubbing at all. It's like watching a spoof off generic Kung Fu movies.
The gore in the movie is surprisingly pretty good. Granted it looks cheap but for a movie this sort, it's not bad at all. Think Peter Jackson's earlier work. However unlike Peter Jackson, not all of the violence is played for laughs (although some of it is). Many scenes are actually quite grisly and one scene in particular is actually cringe-inducing even despite the cheap quality of the effects. Other scenes, the gore is so outlandish, it's not possible to take it seriously. This is most apparent in the scenes with the Black Ninjas, which are surprisingly well coreographed and the most fun I had watching the movie.
All in all, Zombie Doom is one of those so-bad-it's-good movies. Once again, it's kind of like watching a bad SS horror script produced in someone's backyard. Like I said, I laughed a lot. Recommended to fans of Kung Fu and zombie movies. Not for the faint of heart.
I haven't seen Day Of The Dead: Contagium. This one is probably better since it's one of those "so-bad-it's-good" movies while I think stuff like the latter is, well, actually bad. This one's more like Dead Alive except a lot cheaper looking and a lot trashier. Unless you have Netflix, you might have a hard time tracking this down though.
