I will just give you my personal opinion on this film. Now like in many Martial Arts fantasy films made in Hong Kong the story is secondary to the fights and the visuals. However, I really enjoyed the story in this film. Not very thought out character names and some of it becomes a little straight forward as are most films not made in America but I think that is the charm of these films. I noticed when searching for this film they have many versions from many years and even a short-lived TV series. I got a 4.99 bargain version released by The Asylum (This version does not have a Ric Meyers commentary but the film itself holds up. The character development jumps all over and again is straight forward. The good guys eventually leave the villain who is named Lord Conqueror, go figure. The visuals are great and at the end of the day, this film is just entertaining. Many people are turned off by films from other countries because you have to read subtitles or listen to a poor dub track but once you get over it you will realize that they know film better than North Americans will ever know. The Storm Riders is a great introduction into Hong Kong cinema (Get the Tai Seng version with Ric Meyers commentary because that guy knows his stuff) I own and am in the process of buying many more films from other countries. |
