This 2005 UK romantic comedy stars Piper Perabo and Lena Headey, directed by Ol Parker. Here's the gist, Perabo is Rachel, a bride whose nuptials take a surprising turn at the altar. An innocent glance between Rachel and a female florist, Luce (Headey), is all it takes to spark a love-at-first sight romance. (taken from DVD box)
So, there are only two things that make this film different from other romantic comedies -- the romance is between two women and, more charming, is that the film is really about love. Is it a lightning strike or is it founded on who you're most comfortable around? Does falling in love with one woman make you a lesbian? Should someone get involved with a married person?
The best thing about this movie is that it doesn't revel in the fact that the two characters are gay. The film isn't a big set up to the hot lesbian sex because there isn't any. It's really about these two people who fall in love, who just happen to be two women. Thus, I don't recommend renting it for the make-out scenes or sex because this isn't that kind of movie.
The DVD cover makes Perabo the star but I was mostly impressed with Lena Headey. Her character Luce is who you really fall in love with in this movie and to me, this is really
her movie. She's adorable.
The humor is a nice accent to the film, it's not in the foreground, but in the dialogue and interactions between the characters. Here's a quote:
Coop (the best man): I have a thing for the flower girl. I think she likes me. I mean, I got a vibe that she likes me.
Heck (groom): Coop, this is my wedding day. Could we please talk about me?
Coop: Sure... did you get a vibe that she likes me?
Anyway... if you see this in the video store or see it airing on one of the Starz or HBOs, I'd say check it out. It's charming and warm and fuzzy... and Lena Headey's awesome.
