The director's cut of Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation is one of the most underrated horror films ever, IMO.
It's titled The Return Of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and is a brilliant satire poking fun at how bad most horror sequels are.
Even though this original cut got rave reviews at the South by Southwest Film and Media Conference in 95', the studio shelved it for being too weird. Then, after Matthew McConaughey and Renée Zellweger blew up in Hollywood, the studio decided to re-edit the film, cut out most of the satire, and switch certain scenes out of their original order(!?!?), all in an attempt to make the film resemble a more traditional slasher film.
Huge mistake. Most fans hate The Next Generation. And for good reason. It's awful. It's a shame that the studio cut is the version most people are familiar with. For the longest time, I hated the movie and thought it was hands down the worst film in the series, and just in general one of the worst movies ever.
Then I saw the director's cut and it blew my mind. It's now my second favorite film in the series(besides the original). IMO, it's the only film in the series besides the original that actually has something to say.
The director's cut is included in the Scream Factory Bluray release. Track it down!!! |
