It's all useful info though. I have the same problem here in Germany. I've actually printed on A4 and sent scripts to the U.S. and I got a couple of nibbles that way so I guess it's not a major issue.
My biggest problem was finding brads. The largest size I could find in Germany would struggle to hold 4 pages. I checked out the writer's store online but didn't fancy paying the shipping fees so eventually I bought some off ebay for next to nothing.

Q. Living in Europe, I only have access to paper that is longer than standard American paper. Is it acceptable to submit a script on European (A4) paper?
A. Yes, it is. Try to leave a longer bottom margin (2 inches/5 centimeters instead of 1 inch/2.5 centimeters) as scripts that advance to Nicholl quarterfinals will be copied onto standard American paper (8.5 x 11 inches).
Studio readers would probably not care either. I think they would just think it came from outside of the US.
For the outrageous shipping cost, I will say to anyone here looking to buy brads, the brads are about $3 for a box of 100 at Office Depot and being in a business that ships stuff around the world, I'd be glad to go buy some brads and ship them to you. Would probably cost less than ten bucks...I take all major credit cards.
Either way it doesn't seem all that expensive, especially when you consider that it's Priority service. A cheaper alternative would be their economy service, but the price difference is marginal ans writersstore may not even offer it.
One thing I found odd though, is that the rate would be the same no matter what they ship. Maybe I read your post wrong, but the price should change considerably based on the size and weight of the carton.
Ok, I really picked a weird thing to discuss from your post, but hey, I do this for a living.
