Some thoughts:

Your style is a little verbose, at times even redundant. And sometimes you repeat yourself. Not a major problem, if you're getting the pictures across nicely --aim for a quicker read.

When Moses and William tumble into the Mississippi River, neither can swim yet in the very next line you had Moses swim to a branch. Can he swim or not? Moses end up saving William's life anyway. Just have Moses able to swim. In the very next scene we learn Moses can read and William's can't. It makes sense.

You also need a new scene heading when they tumble in the Mississippi River.

Likewise, Soldier 2 and Soldier 3 needs (O.S.) as well.

I'm not so sure Moses talking to himself in the opening scene is a good idea.

a black man, RICHARD, staring at him expressionless.

Is this a mistake? Where did he come from?

The fact of a runway slave, and a deserter from the confederate army makes your story interesting. I think you're off to a fairly solid start.

Keep writing.
