THE FROG PRINCESS

EXT. CAMPGROUND LAKE - DAY

The song of bullfrogs resonate across the lake.

LILY, six, thin and fair, as she watches dark tadpoles scurry in the running feeder creek.

She reaches out to a small side pool with a stick.

LILY
Come on little baby. Get back in with your family.

Several attempts to flick and nudge find success.

Beside her the cattails part as KEVIN, ten, feral product of the burbs, emerges giggling, arms extended with quarry.

The bullfrog seems almost as big as he is.

KEVIN
(monster frog voice)
Groark! Groark! Kiss me Lily! I'm really a--

LILY
You are such a jerk! Put him down! Your hands are killing him!

Kevin halts, flips the poor frog around to look at it, man to amphibian. He mocks.

KEVIN
Am I hurting you? Am I hurting you?

He shakes the creature side to side.

KEVIN
(monster frog voice)
Groark! No. Frog king must kiss princess! (mocking Kevin voice) But she's... she's... so ugly!

LILY
Jerk.

He flips the frog around. Lily scowls and turns away.

KEVIN
(monster frog voice)
I don't care if she's ugly. I need her to command my swamp army. If she will not kiss the frog king maybe she will kiss...

Kevin reaches into his shorts pocket, pulls out...

KEVIN
(monster frog voice)
... the frog prince!

... a smaller frog. Just as Lily turns it leaps from his hand.

The frog lands on her chin. Lily screams. The frog scrambles into her mouth and down her throat.

Horrified, Kevin stares at her as she gulps.

Petrified, Lily trembles with intimate space violation.

The bullfrog looses a mighty GROARK! before leaping to Lily's feet

Kevin and Lily both scream, but Lily's scream becomes a frog's resonant call.

Both close their mouths. Eyes exchange whole conversations.

KEVIN
Are you... ?

Lily shakes her head.

LILY
(froggy voice)
No!

The bullfrog at her feet turns about, side to side with Lily. It stares at Kevin. GROARK!

LILY
Groark!

From the cattails and creek dozens of frogs, large and small, leap to greater creek-side perches.

All stare at Kevin. He takes a step back, but then turns as...

LILY
Groark!

Hundreds of frogs leap behind Lily and the bullfrog. Hundreds more leap to surround Kevin.

KEVIN
Lily. Make them... go away.

LILY
(froggy voice)
I... They...

She presses a frail arm to her tummy, looks down at the bull frog.

The bullfrog at her feet turns to and looks up at her. Nods.

LILY
They need me to command their swamp army. For I have become... The frog princess! GROARK!

FADE IN:

INT. SANDOVAL CAR - DAY

The family touring sedan with the SANDOVAL'S aboard. In the front seat at the helm, FRANK, 45, chubby, swept over hair, horned rimmed glasses calls back to his son.

FRANK
Macky...Macky...Maaacky. Wake up.

A sweaty little fat boy, MACKY, 12, horned rimmed glasses, stirs, then opens his eyes.

MACKY
I dreamed we had air conditioning.

FRANK
Your mother and I thought it was more important to save our money for this vacation.

Macky looks over to his kid sister, JENNY, 10, round face, training bra, although not ready.

MACKY
Jenny, wake up.

He jabs her.

MACKY(cont)
Wake up Jenny.

She stirs.

JENNY
Are we there yet? I'm so hot.

Jenny's mom, SANDRA, 44, flat oily hair, calls back.

SANDRA
Just seven more hours and we'll be at the worlds only known mass beaver burial site.

Macky looks over to Jenny. Nod's his head in disapproval.

JENNY
Has it been two hours yet?

MACKY
Yeah.

JENNY
Well get it out then.

MACKY
Shhhh.

From the front seat, country music plays as the two parents sing along.

JENNY
They can't hear us. Get it out.

MACKY
Fine, just shut up.

Macky pulls a black and red FROG from his backpack.

MACKY
Just once this time. Okay?

JENNY
Okay.

Macky thumps the nose of the frog, it sweat beads on it's back. Jenny licks the frogs back, then Macky.

They smile at one another.

BEGIN HALLUCINATION:

The windows roll up on the car. The two kids smile at one another.

Cold wind blows from the air conditioner. Macky looks down at the frog.

FROG
Told ya I get ya out of this shit, didn't I?

The kids nod in approval.

The country music changes to hip hop and their parents appearence has changes into gangsta's.

FRANK
Fuck the beavers. Let's take it to Vegas.

JENNY/MACKY
Yeah!

END HALLUCINATION:

The windows roll down, the car heats up, the wind blows again. Macky wakes to the sound of his father.

MACKY
I dreamed we had air conditioning.

Like both but the rating calls for it. I know I can give both a LIKE but...
I like B more than A. tiny bitty itsy more.

For two hours of work these two are very good!
Both are exciting, I didn't even think they'd be coherent...

Here's my opinion:
Both are quite original. The first one is more of a kid horror movie.
My vote goes to the second one because it told a complete story in my opinion. But the first one was no less fun (actually funnier), it's just the second one gave me a feeling of 'complete'.

A: LIKE.  It was nice for what it was.
B: DISLIKE.  Dropping a fuck for a two page short immediately eliminates the family comedy tag.

A. Dislike
B. Like

I liked B better than A for the simple fact it was clearly more visual and popped a bit better.  The 1st one was alright, so dislike seems a bit harsh in retrospect.

Both were very well done and creative for a two hour exercise. I hate to rate these.

A - The setup was for a humourous/bad ending for the boy. It didn’t deliver, Instead we get the swamp army. This one I saw as animation. Writing was smooth, outstanding effort, for a two hour jaunt.

B - The use of adult themes seemed inappropriate for a family: Licking toads, mass beaver burial site, profanity, and kids tripping out. Very visual for a two hour exercise. Personally, I thought it was funny as hell.

I agree with some of the other comments. Both were well done little one pagers (or two)

A. Was clever in that it had an ironic ending in such a short script. It was also cute.

B. Although not bad, it wasn't suitable as a family piece. Would have worked better for me if the hallucination part would have been accidental in some way. !0 and 12 year olds bringing a frog along for the "trip" on purpose was a downer for me...as a parent.

Also as a parent -- another glaring flaw here is why the heck Dad would wake his sleeping children with 7 hours left in the drive?

It is so unrealistic that I never did get past it to really enjoy the story.

Both were alright for hammered-out scripts, I suppose, though I am not a fan of hammered-out scripts, and the nod from me goes to A.

Corney, if there are future scripts, you should post them in code.

I enjoyed both shorts, but A fits the criteria better.
The irony in A is misplaced, but it's still a family comedy.
B is funny, but animated short before Pineapple Express funny, not family comedy.

I didn't care for either but I can't say either really turned me off. Maybe B more than A as it kind of assumes the mere act of licking a frog and hallucinating is funny rather than the hallucination's content actually being funny (which it wasn't). There was really nothing to it and the family comedy thing was kinda killed.

A was okay. I don't think people really have a knack for writing kids. Kevin was alright but Lily just sounded like a caricature. And the ending... I probably shouldn't even say what I thought was going to happen. The FADE TO GREEN was cute though.

Think I liked A more than B as it had a much more interesting set up and environment.

Why are we reading hammered-out scripts?  Whose idea was this?

If you were a working screenwriter in Hollywood, guaranteed you'd be  hammering out scripts, left and right.

I thought A. was cute, liked the story, and the ending. Nice.

With B. I thought it took a while to get going, and I don't think kids 10 and 12 should be getting high.
