SimplyScripts Screenwriting Discussion Board  /  Screenwriting Class  /  Montage/flashback question

Hi guys. Just wanted some advice on a techie question. Ok, I'm doing a short and a character has scenes of memories from his life. Literally, certain events of his life will 'flash' up. Each is in a different year, a couple of years apart, with 4 time periods in all. There will be brief action lines and dialogue in each one. the whole bit would be only a minute of screen time, maybe less.

I had thought to write it as montage with supers saying the locale and year. But I don't think dialogue is in montages? After the scenes it will go back to the present time in the story. any ideas? Cheers

I'm sure you can have dialogue in montages Stevie. It's covered in

http://www.simplyscripts.net/cgi-bin/Blah/Blah.pl?m-1100748149/

You could have one of your scenes then...

INT. 17 STEVIE STREET - KITCHEN - JULY 1985 - DAY

Karen kisses Joe then takes the keys from him

                    KAREN
         My keys, not yours.

INT. 24 RINGO STREET - LIVING ROOM - DECEMBER 1996 - DAY

Karen is now heavily pregnant. Joe takes the keys from her hand.

                    JOE
Now these keys are mine darling.

INT. 69 LENNON AVENUE - JULY 2005 - DAY

Karen now has short hair and earrings the size of tennis balls.

                    KAREN
What do you mean you've lost the keys?

Thanks RV! Love the street names...

Ok, I checked that old thread. I'll have to go with flashbacks I think, as my scenes aren't really montage. I'll use supers for the place and year and see how it goes. It's nearly done and I hope to send it to Don in a couple of days. Cheers buddy.

You can have dialouge in montages. I'll admit it doesn't look nice but you can have them. If you read pilot of scrubs theres one in there.
