I'm not a big Matt Damon fan but maybe he can pull it off.  I enjoyed Nemesis so I'll probably wind up seeing this one.  Probably won't be a huge box office hit but it should still be fun with Captain Kirk.

Be excellent to each other

it hasnt even been written yet... so what you're hearing is just nonsense and hersey...

there was an article on IMDB.com - not the most reliable source but take it as you will - JJ Abrams slammed reports Kirk had anything to do with the new movie.

If Kirk is in it, he should be a no-name.

J.J. Abrams is officially directing.

Quoted Text
After months of speculation on the internet, it has been confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter that J.J. Abrams, the creator of the hit ABC dramas "Lost" and "Alias," will indeed be directing the first movie in Paramount Pictures' relaunch of Gene Rodenberry's Star Trek movie franchise.

The 11th installment of the series will actually be a prequel to the original television series and the first movie, as it chronicles the first meeting of a young James T. Kirk and Mr. Spock at Starfleet Academy and their first space mission.

Although Abrams had been committed to produce the movie for a number of months, it was finally confirmed that he would also direct it. Look for more announcements in the next few months as he starts casting.

So there you go.

Cheers, Chismeister.

Mr. Spock

An official announcement was made on today at Comic-Con. Zachary Quinto will be living long and prosper as the new Mr. Spock. He is best known for his role as Sylar on NBC's Heroes.

Update: Leonard Nimoy is also returning. It was inferred that Nimoy is coming back as older Spock, not as a new character.

Why would they meet at Star Fleet?  Spock was already a crew member of the Enterprise when Pike was the captain.

I don't know if anyone remembers this, but Spock was 110 years old during the series.

Unfortunately, I don't think the people behind this film really care about this type of attention to detail. At first, they advertised this film as a reboot of the franchise, so those errors could have been easily written off. But now that Leonard Nimoy is returning and is coming back as an older Spock, a reboot doesn't really work.

Oh and here is the new teaser poster for the flick.

Gee, in that case why not get a talking tribble, voiced by Eddie Murphy?

w00t!  Congrats, Quinto!  I think he'll do well

He did play his role on Heroes with very few emotions.  I guess playing aVulcan wouldn't be a reach for him.

Only a partial reboot? Time traveling Romulans? Alternate timelines?

Apparently the plot for the next film has been revealed over at Ain't It Cool News. Moriarty, who has a friend with "a very nice office on Melrose" gave readers a hint at what they can expect from Abrams version of Trek.

Quoted Text
Picture an incident that throws a group of Romulans back in time. Picture that group of Romulans figuring out where they are in the timeline, then deciding to take advantage of the accident to kill someone’s father, to erase them from the timeline before they exist, thereby changing all of the TREK universe as a result. Who would you erase? Whose erasure would leave the biggest hole in the TREK universe is the question you should be asking.

Who else, of course, but James T. Kirk?

According to Variety, Eric Bana has signed on to play main villain Nero in the next Star Trek film.

He's best know for his roles in Black Hawk Down, The Hulk and Troy. Click the link above for more info.
