Does anyone know what the hell is going on with The Sopranos?

The last thing I heard was that they where taking a year off and then the show would be back in 2006. Well it's late July and I've heard nothing regarding it's return.

Go to HBO.com or something.  They just finished the new season, like, a month ago.  It was pretty good (they all are), but not as good as some of the previous ones.

There will be a "short season" of about eight episodes early next year, I believe.

I checked the HBO site a couple of months ago and couldn't get the info I wanted.

Thanks for the update Burt, but how do you know the latest series is good if they only finished filming it a month ago?

The 8 episodes you say it's going for surprises me, because I heard the next season was going to be longer than the others because they were having such a long break.

No, Chris.  They've been on TV.  I've seen them this year.  Watched all of 'em, from about Feb to about April, I suppose.  I was disappointed in some of it, but it's still a far cry from most of what's out there.

And the final 8 episodes to air early next year will be the end of it.  At least, that is what they say.

Is it that you cannot get HBO in Australia?  (not being snotty, just curious)

I don't think we get HBO here. We get a lot of HBO shows but we don't have the HBO channel; we have Foxtel and a couple of other minor cable channels.

The Sopranos was on free to air TV here, but it was buried in the 10.30 timeslot on a Monday night, because it didn't rate that well.

I'm glad to hear that they actually have made the next season and hopefully they'll show it here soon. Maybe they're waiting for the next bunch of episodes so they can show it all together.

I heard they are doing shooting one more season, but they have to wait for James gandolfini who was in the hospital getting surgury or something.

Yeah. A unexpected knee surgery for James Gandolfini has forced HBO to push back The Sopranos' final salvo of episodes about two months, to early March 2007. Chris Albrecht (Network chairman) promised that it will be worth the wait, saying, "I know the story lines for the final eight [episodes], and I am absolutely, positively certain that when the curtain comes down, the vast, vast, vast majority of people will say it's one of the great things of all time."

I've finally caught some of the episodes from the current season of the Sopraons'. The first few were good, but not great. However, I really enjoyed the episodes that covered Tony’s last few days in hospital and his first few days back at home.

The episode where Paulie discovers the truth about his mother, and Bobby botches that hit, was hilarious.

I’ve also discovered that Timothy Van Patten, (Peter Stegman in "Class of 84') is one of the show's writers.

The final 8 episodes are still counted as part of the season that just ended. Not a bad season. The show isn't as good as it used to be, but still better than most shows.

I've just finished watching episode 12 of season 6 and I thought the ending was a bit flat.

But generally I thought this season was probably better than the previous seasons, because the characters are more developed and I feel like I know them well.

As a person who works in the drug and alcohol sector, I think Christopher's battle with addiction is being very realistically portrayed.

The gay story line about Vito was also very good; I thought the scenes with Vito dealing with his homosexuality where well written and done with open mindedness and sensitivity; the homophobic response from all the Jersey guys whilst predictable, where very funny.

The development of AJ from a teenager to a young man has also become another interesting element in the Soprano's saga.

As for Tony, well, what can you say? I think Tony's still just Tony, every time he takes a step forward he usually takes another step back, but he's still cool.

I can't wait to see the final episodes of this epic show. I have a hunch that stick up Tony and Christopher did on those guys from the Vipers, might come back to haunt them, because they made a few references to it after it happened, it was like the writers wanted the audience to remember it.

All in all, I reckon the Sopranos is still going as strong as ever and I think this season has actually had a few more laughs along the way than previous seasons.

The best show on TV for mine.

Probably one of the funniest moments in the show was from the season before the newest one, where all the mobsters are spreading a rumor about Adriana and Tony and they keep changing up the story to something more and more rediculous.

The thing that really sorta' made me sceptic was how everything happening in it was huge in the series. Okay maybe there was one or two episodes that weren't so important in this season but.....

Like a couple things. Tony finding out the dude is gay. Tony's son trys to kill father and does drugs and crap. Tony needs to have mobsters respect him again.

Thats onyl a few but, you get the point I hope.

That might have something to do with it being the final season. Sure there are a lot of things happening, but there are a lot of characters in the show; it's not as if it's all happening to the same person.

The Sopranos is undoubtedly the greatest TV show in existence. EVER. PERIOD. These characters are so richly drawn and developed, the world of the Sopranos is just a beautiful masterpiece of subtle touches and realistic details. It's really epic storytelling in every way. I have more investedn in these characters than some of my real relatives. The greatest television show in history.

Cheers, Chism.

Sorry, Chism, but I strongly disagree with you there.  While I do like The Sporanos, there are and were better shows on television.  'Carnivale' was a lot better when it was on (though the final ending truly blew).  Given a choice between 'The Sopranos' and 'Big Love,' I'd probably go with the latter.  'House' is also a much better show.

The quality of the Sopranos has gone down hill in the last two seasons.  Maybe it's the gap between seasons.  Maybe the show is just running its course and is now burning out.
