Last night, my wife and I saw Evil Dead: The Musical and both agree that this show will have a cult following almost as strong as the Rocky Horror Show.
The story deals with a bunch of teens who spend spring break in a cabin in the woods. There, they find the ancient Book of the Necronomicon and accidentally unleash demons with it. It sounds like a cliche plot because, well, it is. This production, however, is done as a parody/tribute to Evil Dead and Evil Dead 2 as well as horror films in general and, of course, Bruce Campbell. Many mentions and jokes were made to the King of the B-movies and one or two at the expense of Sam Raime, director of the original ED movie.
Songs and music were very appropriate for the story and included songs entitled What the Fuck Was That?, Ode to An Accidental Shooting and All the Men in My Life Are Killed by Candarian Demons.
The only bad part of the show was the fact that my wife and I sat in the second row, aka: the splatter zone. We were warned that we could get messy as the blood sprays. In fact, the theater issued ponchos out to everyone in the first three rows. Sure enough, there was plenty of blood as our hero, Ash, killed the demons with his chainsaw and trusty boom-stick. People in the first two rows got sprayed pretty badly. Now for the bad part: we didn't get a drop of blood on us. I was hoping on going home with a bloodied copy of Playbill as a souvenier...
We do recommend this musical. I don't know when it'll leave New York City and travel around (it actually started in Canada), but it is worth keeping an eye out for.
