Haha...funny topic.  I actually had this conversation with some friends a long time ago.

The criteria were that it had to capture the tone of the show -- but also stand alone as a piece of music -- thus disqualifying the "story-teller" themes like "Brady Bunch" or "Gillagan's Island".

Ultimately, nobody could agree on just one -- but I chose this one -- hippy-trippy 60's surfing-guitar melded with horns that harken back to the big-band era. I cannot think of another piece of music quite like it.

Hey, it's my tiny, little IMDb!

Quoted from Bruce3456

The opening to Seasons 5-6?!?  Blasphemy, I tell you!

----

Besides that, my favorite theme song goes to "The Wire".  Not only is it a great song, but they changed the opening credits each season including the style in which the song is sung.  It's pretty cool.

Song with lyrics, I’d say Cheers:

With no lyrics, Mission Impossible:

(sorry I couldn’t find the original theme, only this hack job)

But I also love Matlock:

Ok, the Peanuts theme wins... it's CUTE. But for annoying it's still The Greatist American hero, believe it or not!

There are so many good ones; it's hard to pick just one.

Off the top:

The Beverly Hillbillies theme song definitely captured the theme of the show.

Gilligan's Island.

Mary Tyler Moore.

Jeffersons

Cheers

Scooby doo

Not a TV series really but: Hockey Night in Canada

Mr. Rogers

Seventh Heaven
