Kubrick was one of the most over rated directors of the late 20th century.
Almost without fail, his work was boring, cold and uninvolving, his characters nothing more than cardboard cutouts rather than real people you could feel for.
The best thing you can say about Kubrick's films is that they look fantastic.
Unfortunately, this is not enough. A film should invoke some other reaction than "wow, ain't this pretty!"
It does not surprise me one bit that "2001" required the viewers to take drugs to make it watchable - having sat through it I felt a strong need for powerful opiates myself!
I have read that screenplay. And, I've no doubt Kubrick would have made a good a job of it eventually. But it bored the arse of me. Sorry. I think he was lucky he didn't do it.

Allow me to retort Niles.
I do beg to differ. Spielbeg (and you may not be a fan but I continue) said in an interview that once you start watching a Kubrick movie you can't stop. And he's right.
Kubrick, in my humble, made some of the finest films that exist. I still watch them all on a regular basis. I add that I also watch Scorcese and Spielberg as well. But it's Kubrick I come back to. Evey fucking one of them is genius. And he never repeated himself. So there!
