How do you all feel about this?

Does language affect our cognition and our reality? Or do we USE language to affect our cognition and our reality?

I believe in both somehow, as in chicken/egg and superposition.

Would love to hear your thoughts on this. It will take my mind off Jeana-Marie.

We use language to communicate our reality.  So language is an extension or an effect of our reality rather than having an affect on it.  Now back to my screenwriting.

Sorry, Sandra, but this is a load of bunk.

When there is something outside the sphere of our language, we create a word for it, and it then becomes part of our language.

Not so long ago, there was no such thing as the internet.  Even the word did not exist.  There were not even words to describe the concept.

According to the Whorf hypothesis, all of this could therefore never have arisen.

Uh uh. You're having an effect on me and I'm having an effect on you, no?

Michael, going out now. I shall expect to meet you in my thoughts.

No, Bert it's not. Think about this seriously before ranting off like I often do.   Not only do we create from words/thoughts, but the word creates our thoughts too, I think. I t-h-i-n-k how cool is that? Bottom line: Words, thoughts, creation or creation, thoughts, words. Makes ya think.

I think you are agreeing with me, but it's hard to tell.   Actually, you probably don't know if you agree with me now.

Fortunately, Sandra, there is no need for me to qualify or temper my opinions with the phrase, "I think".

Know why?

Because -- by your very own Whorf Hypothesis -- my opinions are reality.

How cool is that?

You got that right!!!!!!!!!! Now, stop playing around in this thread!!!!   Or, I'll start a Bert fan club and you'll never hear the end of it. You won't be able to run away from yourself. Everywhere you go there will be Bert posters! And cups! And T-shirts!

The reason we have an effect on each other is because of what we communicate, not how.  It's the meaning, not the language.

Yes, my dear, it's the way we communicate. It's language on all levels and that to me is truly beyond words. In this, I agree, but I can't explain.

Tao Ching
Tao Classic - Chapters 1 to 37

Chapter 1

The Tao that can be spoken is not the eternal Tao
The name that can be named is not the eternal name
The nameless is the origin of Heaven and Earth
The named is the mother of myriad things
Thus, constantly without desire, one observes its essence
Constantly with desire, one observes its manifestations
These two emerge together but differ in name
The unity is said to be the mystery
Mystery of mysteries, the door to all wonders

Thank you for that beautiful quote Chris, "T" to you too!

Yes, I just learned if you quote on a quote, something very weird happens.

It's no secret I haven't watched that many movies or even much television compared to many people (irony at its finest) and so the name "Morticia" immediately rang a bell, but I actually had to think for a moment and ask my husband: "Who's Morticia?" Oh THAT Morticia!!! I didn't watch a lot of the Adam's Family; so thanks to Google, I researched and I can tell you this:

Yes, I'm completely intense and completely flighty; so yes, you are revealing something absolutely.

I'm heading to Barcelona on a cruise in January. We might even make it into Israel. My husband and I will be dancing and maybe this will be us: LOL
