While I was amused that our favorite, Uwe Boll, directed half of these stinkburgers, I was surprised that Super Mario Brothers was on the list. IMHO, the film was very imaginative and captured the spirit of the game.

Super Mario Brothers
As a kid, I remember being very upset that Mario and Luigi didn't wear their trademark outfits until the last 20 or so minutes of the film. Lame.
The Wizard is the only video game movie I ever really cared for... While not directly tied to any one franchise, other than Nintendo itself, I still feel it has something to it. A lot of people disagree with me. A lot of people think it's a curd of cheese from a cows tit, but I like it. The whole thing. Even the absurd nature of how Universal Studio got a free commercial spot as did Nintendo.
There is something to be said about the 80's... It cannot be duplicated. Also, this was Tobey McGuire's 1st on screen flick, I do believe.
But, on topic... Yeah, all those movies sucked. Super Mario Bro's wasn't as bad as some make it out to be. It's just different. Some of it was pretty ingenious at times... You just have to set aside your love for the games and characters to see the vision. I wrote a script covering super mario bro's one time. It was pretty true to the series and a lot of folks who got ahold of it on various game site/forums talk about it to this day...
Not to defend Uwe Boll or anything because the guy has no talent as a director but Postal is NOT that bad. The Phantom, Captain America and many others are worse overall films.
Double Dragon and Street Fighter are not that bad either... where's MK2 on this list?
I'm sorry, but there's no way in hell Silent Hill deserves to be anywhere near that list. It is miles, and I mean miles ahead of anything listed there. In fact, it's probably the only half-way decent videogame adaptation to date. Anderson's Resident Evil movies, Mortal Kombat (or its sequel), or Doom should take its spot instead. These guys obviously didn't do their homework on this one.
Alone in the Dark is one of the worst films I've ever seen. I mean, Tara Reid playing someone intelligent? Whoever was in charge of casting that role should never work in movies again. And don't get me started on Uwe Boll.
Silent Hill was very watchable and I agree it shouldn't be anywhere near that list.
Never saw the Super Mario movie, I've always been a Sonic the Hedgehog man myself.
I would watch Dead or Alive again, but not because the film was any good, just for the very wet Holly Valance. Other than that, it fully deserves its place on that list.
Agreed, Silent Hill was pretty decent. As for the rest, yeah thet're all pants lol. Oh and I thought Doom wasn't great either, especially after the incredibly long wait for it to be made.
Check out my scripts...if you want to, no pressure.
If you look over the wikipedia list of video game movies you begin to see a trend with why these films are on the list. I'd say very few of the films that are live action are widely considered great or even good.
Why people expect a masterpiece based on the source material is beyond me.
All I have come to expect over the years is the same cliche tired narrowminded storyline that is used in every movie anymore.
I give Silent Hill props for not doing that unlike pretty much every other film. They tried something different and it didn't work great but it works.
Replace Silent Hill with Mortal Kombat: Annihilation.
Then, maybe replace Super Mario Bros. (that can be 11th) for Max Payne. For two reasons, this should be done. 1. The game is a long movie! 2. See 1. ALl it had going for it was the visual style, which I'll admit, I liked.
If they didn't use the name it probably would have been straight to dvd bargain bin crap and not "Max Payne" pretty much tainting the franchise for no reason since it really had nothing to do with Max Payne.
I thought that Silent Hill was a great movie visually; it was identical to the games in this sense. The story, unfortunately, was unfocused and muddled. I was really looking forward to this one because SH2 was an incredible game; the movie should've been this game shot for shot.
I thought Super Mario Brothers was a very fun movie. It captured the fun flavor of the game and is very different from most of the other shoot-em-up or beat-em-up adaptations that came out afterwards.
They make mention that Super Mario Bro's was the very 1st video game to movie... But it wasn't. If memory serves Tron was. But It was made for the soul purpose of making the movie later from what I gather...
Anyways, to reiterate
Silent Hill - Looks good. Filmed nice. Story is stuck so far up nowheres ass if it were an enema it'd be home, though.
Alone in the Dark - The games were/are bad enough. I, to this day, have yet to see the movie. I don't want to, either. I actually stopped watching video game to movie tie ins because they represent nothing of the source material.
The one game to movie I'm going to hate to see is Uncharted... It's such a brilliant piece of media that it's going to be lost all to hell with some A-list actor "probably Jackman" playing Drake. That's going to piss me off. More so when Nathan Fillion looks just like the guy. Hell, I was pissed when I heard Christian Bale was up for the role of Snake in Metal Gear over Trevor St. John who not only acts better but looks just like the damn character.
Hollywood can fuck up an ice cream cone. Nuff said.

The movie came out before the game(s), but they were released in the same year.

Especially when Drake's Fortune has a great story without some writer trying to change everything so he/she can get paid.
Then again who wants to watch a movie that's "Tomb Raider" but better and the third act become some half assed zombie monster movie.

I dunno, I bought Uncharted for when my nephew came to stay with us over the summer about a a year ago.. & I didn't get Tomb Raider when I sat down to play Uncharted with him. It was, as you said, better. Much better... But I remember, and I'm no gamer by any means these days, Tomb Raider being more about puzzles and truck like controls. I remember she was meshed together with these ugly, flat polygon and she controlled like a tank. I remember her having little story within her games too.
Uncharted is the only game I've ever played where I felt like a game superseded the film experience. It's brilliant at nearly every turn. Again, I'm no gamer... I got a Ps3 when they 1st came out for blu-ray only... Got a new one just a month ago for my office cos I put all my movies onto my old one and use it as a media hub in our living room... But I got Uncharted 2 and it's a cut above anything I've seen or played. It really is a bridge in media.
I just hope they don't get Jackman to play him or Christian Bale... You can't just cram someone into a role because they're A-list. And that's what I fear they are doing with Jackman and Bale. They are cramming these Dick Leaks into these roles because of public appeal... Not because they can act.
