I know studios send out those "for your concideration" DVDs to those who pick the nominees, but how often has a movie, that hasn't been released yet, been nominated for best picture/best director (Avatar)?

No real surprises there. Whether Avatar stands a chance at the Oscars is a nother question though.

Deserved win for Jeff Bridges (I love that guy), hopes he takes the Oscar as well.

Good choices.

Agree with pretty much all of them.

Why the hell is 30 Rock still winning these things when The Office is as good as its ever been? That makes no sense to me.

Other than that, it's all good. Would've liked to see Tarantino take something home, but there's always the Oscars.

Glad to see Sheldon Turner (and Reitman) take home screenwriting. If you haven't yet, then check out Turner's 'Conspiracy of Fools', which is indevelopment - great script, and to me, that's how you write a script.

Turner along with Stuart Beattie, Patrick Marber and Peter Morgan are putting out great stuff, and are all very concise and economical with their work.

If The Hurt Locker is similarly shunned at the Oscars, I'll be one angry mofo...

It didn't. Glee did. Mad Men won best drama which I was happy to see. It's a very good show.

However, looking at the films that were nominated makes me think it hasn't been a very good year for movies. Sure, Avatar broke new ground as well box office records, but when you compare this year's likely Oscar nominees to other years the field is a bit weak. Also, after casting my eye over Empire Magazine's 101 Movies You Must See in 2010 list, I get the impression that 2010 isn’t going to be a great year for movies either. I don't know if it's because I'm  "movied out" and jaded, or if it’s because the movies of late have been mediocre.

I'm really placing a lot of hope in Nolan's Inception - I have a strong feeling it'll be the movie of 2010. Other than that tere's really only a couple of movies I really look forward to seeing in 2010: The Book of Eli and Shutter Island (although the 16-year old boy in me is sorta also looking forward to The Expendables - even though I'm pretty sure it's gonna stink).

Oh, I totally forgot about World War Z. Definitely looking forward to that one as well.

Yeah. Shutter Island looks good. I want to check out The Town and The Tree of Life too.

By the way, Rob, I watched the Tyson documentary last night. I found out a few things about him that I didn't know. It was pretty interesting and well paced. Have you seen it?

Yeah, I thought Tyson was really good. It was nice to see a different side of him - the real him so to speak. He might have been the baddest man on the planet but he's still "just" human and just as fragile as the rest of us - if not more so.

Definitely one of the highlights in 2009.
