First off, I will say that I have never, in all the years that I have wanted to be a writer, ever thought of doing so under my real name.

I could not tell you why. I just have never given it any real consideration. Now, I know what you are going to say - "If I write a screenplay and it's produced, I would want my name on screen". But, if I had one produced under the NC name, say, I'd know it was mine - and in any case, I'd be more interested in getting paid than getting a credit!

Although it is not at all unusual to use pen-names in literature, it is very rare that they are used in film. Usually, if they are, it is because the writer has used one in previous work outside of the medium, or because they don't want to be associated with the film, for whatever reason.

But, to my knowledge, they is nothing to say you can't use one. (Although I have read that WGA writers need the Guild's permission to use one! I don't know how true this is though).

As you will know, I tend to put the username that I have chosen for the SS boards - Niles Crane - on my scripts. This has caused some comment, I should say, with people puzzled as to whether I should be called Simon or Niles.

I chose the name simply because people at work have commented that I remind them of NC, and I also like "Frasier". It has proven to be a rather lucky name for me, I think - and I am the kind of person who takes signs and omens to heart! (cranes are a symbol of good fortune anyway).

So I am thinking that I may adopt it formally as my writing name in 2010 - and see if the luck continues. There is the problem about the fact that it's a well known TV character, which may cause problems - but it is a real name in America (I checked), with a number of actual Niles Crane's resident there. In any case, I can adapt it to something like Simon Niles Crane to loosen the connection.

Now, the question is simple - does any one else here use, or plan to use, a pen-name? What is your opinion on the use of them in film. They are rare - but Diablo Cody has recently popularised the use of a false name without it being linked to shame over the script, so it may catch on! Do you think that, if you put in the work, you should get the credit under the name you were born with?

I am just interested in hearing what other SS member have to say re the subject. It may interest you to know that one well known writing advice webpage has said that worrying or even considering using a pen-name before you have your work accepted is a sure sign you are an amateur!

I have more than one pen name, but it's all me and I'm not worried about what happens to turn up namewise because I'm rather fond of Rutabagas. A kind of turnip? Get it?

Just write and don't worry about names. If you like a name, go ahead and use it. As far as luck goes, if you believe that the name Edward Finquellin is a lucky name, then use it.

The luckiest thing is perceiving yourself as lucky even when you're down on your luck.
