THE 82ND ACADEMY AWARDS PREDICTION GAME - ROUND 1: THE NOMINATIONS
I'm a film nerd, I'm slightly competitive, and it's awards season. So what better way to combine those three things than in the 82nd Academy Awards Prediction Game? The awards themselves aren't until March 7th, but since it's less than a month until the nominations are announced (Feb 2nd), I officially open...
Round 1: The Nominations Round.
A) SCORING POINTS The aim of the game is simple. You have to try and predict the nominations for what are considering the 'major' Academy awards. That means making 55 predictions - 10 for Best Picture (which has been newly expanded), and 5 for the other nine Awards. Points will be awarded as follows:
- 1 point for every correct nomination - A bonus 5 points if you correctly predict every nomination for that award... - BUT if you correctly predict all 10 Best Picture nominations, you get a big bonus of 20 points.
That means that there's a maximum of 120 points on offer - 55 nominations, plus 65 bonus points (I'll be honest - if anyone gets above 60 I'll be very impressed). You don't have to make full predictions for each award if you don't want to, but if you don't then you won't be able to receive the 5 bonus points in any category you don't fully predict, and you'll obviously reduce your chances of winning.
B) 'HOW DO I SUBMIT MY PREDICTIONS?' Well, in my opinion just posting them in the thread isn't the best way - everyone's predictions are likely to influence everyone else's, meaning we might just get very similar lists (which would be dull). What I propose is this. You can get my email address by clicking through to my member profile. Email me a full list of your predictions, either in an attached Word document or in the body of the email - it's up to you.
You have until February 1st to make your predictions - that's the day the Golden Globes are handed out, which will make this easier and therefore less fun. I'll type up a list of everyone's predictions as I receive them, and when the nominations are announced on February 2nd I'll tot up everyone's scores and post them here in ascending order.
I'm playing too; I've already made my predictions, but of course I could just read everyone else's and change mine. SO, here's what I'll do: the first couple of people that send me my predictions will get my list in return, so that they can check my scoring and make sure I haven't cheated when the nominations are announced. That's fair, right?
D) THE RESULTS The winner, obviously, will be the one with the highest score (which doesn't necessarily mean the most correct predictions - getting the bonus points is important, too). Once the nominations are announced, we'll do Round 2: The Winners.
This is geeky, I know, but I'd love for everyone to do it, it's honest competition (let's face it, we're all competitive here - I think you HAVE to be if you seriously want to be a screenwriter), and it'll be fun!
E) CATEGORIES Okay, these are the categories to predict and how you should lay out your predictions.

I've got to be honest, I thought more people might be interested in having a go at this. Thanks to the four people who've entered so far.
Not annoyed or disappointed, just want to bump this up for anyone who hasn't noticed it yet! I've extended the deadline 'til Feb 1st in case anyone else wants to take part.
I think the problem is that you've discouraged posting in this thread and thus any actual discussion of the Oscars, making this into too much of a contest. Frankly, I'd like to hear other people's thoughts. The anonymity kind of kills the fun of it all. That's me, anyway.

Looks like you were spot on - in fact, no-one else entered after Jan 10th...
Right, results time! I've checkad and double-checked my counting, so I'm fairly sure this is right.
Congrats to Bruce3456, Mr. Blonde and bangston for all earning bonus points for correctly guessing every nominee in certain categories. And congrats to Jordan, who got 9 out of the 10 Best Picture nominees (just went with Star Trek over The Blind Side, but then who wouldn't?)!
However, there's one clear winner, and that's Bruce3456. Well done, Bruce. Due to overwhelming lack of interest (mainly due to how I tried to run this little comp) I'm not going to bother with Round 2, so you are officially the winner. Well done!
