Thought this might be useful for some as it was for me: http://filmmakeriq.com/2012/10/10-reasons-why-first-time-freelancers-fail/

Trying to balance out paying the bills with gaining experience across TV ads, music videos, web spots, short films, student films, independent films and ultimately feature films is a tough gig. Reaching the point where you actually jump off and try to live totally off your production work (whichever discipline) is a tough choice and a gutsy one. That article does a good job in summarising some of the inherent dangers.

Is anyone here actually freelancing? If so, for how long? Do you use resources such as Callbox to get yourself out there? I'm at the point where I'm considering a full launch but am hesitant, excited and scared. The interesting thing I've learned this last 12 months is how separate the film, TV and commercials communities are. Whilst there is crossover, it's not huge for those at the bottom of the food chain.

I've been trying to get work as a freelance reader for production companies, but nothing's come through yet.

"I remember a time of chaos. Ruined dreams. This wasted land. But most of all, I remember The Road Warrior. The man we called 'Max'."

THE PINBALL WARRIOR (scifi, WIP, ~30 pg.)
A STAND AGAINST EVIL (short, 9 pg.)

Yeah - interesting article. This surprised me:

"We wouldn’t have jumped into our creative fields if we liked people and dealing with them "

But the guy raises a couple of pretty good points - he's clearly been there and done that.

I've done some freelancing. It's like prostitution. Doesn't actually take much to please a client - it's just tricky getting one in the first place
