One of the most influential sci-fi writers ever dies at 87.   He turned the vampire genre on its head with I Am Legend (1954).  Then one classic after another:  Hell House, Stir of Echoes, The Shrinking Man.  Also wrote the epic Twilight Zone episode Nightmare at 20,000 feet.  His script for Duel helped put Spielberg on the map.  What a legacy.

I read I Am Legend in high school and loved it and think it still holds up today. A unique (at the time) take on the vampire genre but also *the* progenitor of the zombie genre as we know it... and that's just one of many Matheson works. Sad to see him go but man, what a legacy.

What good are choices if they're all bad?

I hadn't seen that until Shelton posted it on Facebook the other day. Such a damn shame because, between Matheson and Bradbury, they gave us some of the best story ideas and executions ever. Both were way ahead of their time and now they're both dead.
