So what do we rely on, as aspiring screenwriters. The indie market? Netflix and cable? Sounds like the future is now.

Offhand - I'd say yeah - the answer ultimately will be the indie market, Kickstarter, doing it yourself - and the new opportunities emerging on channels like Netflix and Amazon.

Granted, the *old* studio system had issues, too.  For instance, back in the early days, screenwriters were basically owned by the studios.  They didn't have the option to sell to the highest bidder, etc.  So I wouldn't argue that *everything's* worse.  But there is less room now for good original scripts to be seen and/or scripts with indie themes to get traction in today's industry.  ...unless folks start blazing their own trails outside the system.  Fortunately, the technology is more available to do that now, at least a little.

I think Landis is absolutely right. Still, I think it's important to keep one's head up, stay alert and informed, and keep an open mind. The film industry is undergoing a metamorphosis, just like the music industry before it (the music industry is still evolving). I think we're still in the transition period so naturally there's growing pains to be had but new doors have already opened up as a result (some of them have been mentioned here) and I'd expect there are more to come.
