Nightís at an end. Just watched an interested doc called After Truth on HBO. I recommend it. All about the dangers of real fake news and itís impact on society. Itís scary and enlightening.

Prior to watching that, I came to the conclusion I must delete my FB app and consider going off the grid. Maybe permanently if I can adhere to it. This virus seems to be bringing out the worst in people and I, for one, have been growing increasingly sick of it all for a long time now. Tonight was just kind of a culmination of all that.

Iíve been working and find myself looking at old people who come into the shop a bit differently. I was saddened to have felt that way.

Oh Steven that doc has affected you obviously. I didnít understand how it connects old people coming to some shop (was wonder what shop) with fb exactly but Iíll look up the documentary. Iím scared to watch it though. What if I decide to leave something more essential than fb...

I just watched Midssomar and that one is  a pretty disturbing flick. I wouldnít recommend it though

That's very ageist, Steve.  If we're lucky we'll all be there one day. The alternative is not much chop is it.

I'm giving a wide berth to everyone at the moment. I always like my personal space anyway. Hate when people get in your face. Whoa! Take a step back buddy, I can see your eyeballs.

I'm with you on the social media crap. Born cynical. You don't have to delete anything, just do what I do - switch off, sign out,  don't jump to the hype and scaremongering... And escape through writing. Hmm, well, I haven't managed time for the writing yet, but you know...

I just watched that too... on Wednesday night. I thought it was OK for a horror.

Had to bite my tongue the other day when in a COVID-19 meeting with the heads of other departments, the office manager and the CEO - and they start banging on about the virus leaking from a secret lab in Wuhan, and how it's "definitely not from bat soup!"
Some people really overvalue their own stupid opinion.

When this thing started and was still mostly contained to China, I overheard one of the directors actually say that "It's natures why of ethnic cleansing"... I avoid that person now.

Even my own Dad is sharing utter bullshit stories on Facebook.

Steven

Based on the above, plus some of the utter bullshit on social media (My favourite is that if you place chopped onions around your house it "sucks" up the coronavirus... ) and what the news is showing us, my faith in humanity has also been shaken... and I've lashed out.

BUT - I have to keep reminding myself that it's usually the minority "bad" that gets pushed to the forefront, with the (hopefully!) majority "good" behind it.

The news won't report on the millions of us who go to the shops and shop as normal, but they will report on the story of the woman who pulled a knife on a man in a supermarket to get his toilet roll.

We see the few people who share/promote crap on social media - but don't see the millions of people who don't.

The good

Right now, around the world, countless people work tirelessly and selflessly to get us through this - Doctors, nurses, paramedics, food delivery drivers (feel free to add to the list) - with medical staff coming out of retirement at a time of need.

Please share any feel-good stories you know or have heard about so we can all see that humanity still lives... Because I for one could sure-as-shit hear some of that right about now.

Such as:

- Italians applauding medical staff from their balconies to thank them.
- The Spanish fitness instructor who gave a fitness class from a roof to those quarantined in their apartments around him.
- The artist offering free online drawing classes for children stuck at home
- The countless people I have heard about who have reached out to elderly or vulnerable neighbours to let them know they are there if they need anything.

EDIT: forgot to share the below - it tickled me

I see bullshit from both sides. Soon powers will be brought in where even if you're not sick you can be hauled off to 'quarantine' if found outside during curfew hours.

I can't believe how much freedom we are about to give away through panic over a virus. It is unbelievable to me the sheer amount of mindless people about... and every one of them actually thinks they're awake.

There is a bioweaponry lab in Wuhan, the only one in all China. They actually study viruses in terms of weaponising them. Also, not long after the outbreak, the Chinese government released this new directive:

"Instructions on strengthening biosecurity management in microbiology labs that handle advanced viruses like the novel coronavirus."

Why would they need to strengthen biosecurity management if biosecurity management was already well managed? It kinda suggests that they've had a leak.

I don't believe there has ever been a virus that can jump from animal to human without some help.

SARS also escaped... twice... Strangely too, this Coronavirus is actually another, lighter version of SARS.

You honestly prefer to believe bat soup, then that is up to you. Personally, I blame human intervention and cover-ups. This is a man-made virus escaped into the world and you can bet our governments are going to take ful advantage of it while it's here.

It's certainly possible, Dustin.

There's also some rumours about the lab in the US, Maryland. That was dealing with viruses and contagions and was shut down... It's also nearby to where the mystery vaping illnesses started (am illness that hasn't occurred anywhere else in the world).

People like us will never know.

As I say, I tend to beleive the science rather than conspiracy theories - especially when I haven't heard of any credible evidence or from a credible source to support them.

The world blames China for leaking the outbreak, China blames U.S.A for deliberately leaking it there.

"RNA sequences closely resemble those of viruses that silently circulate in bats, and epidemiologic information implicates a bat-origin virus infecting unidentified animal species sold in Chinaís live-animal markets." - From the New England Journal of Medicine
https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMp2002106?query=TOC#

"Here we review what can be deduced about the origin of SARS-CoV-2 from comparative analysis of genomic data. We offer a perspective on the notable features of the SARS-CoV-2 genome and discuss scenarios by which they could have arisen. Our analyses clearly show that SARS-CoV-2 is not a laboratory construct or a purposefully manipulated virus." - Published in Nature Medicine
https://www.nature.com/articles/s41591-020-0820-9

I don't know where it comes from, I don't much care - But based on the sources of information I know which I believe.

If you know any sources to support the theory it was leaked, then please share - I'd be interested to read.

Like Dustin says it's strange that China announced security measures to strengthen bio containment, and also that they tried to cover up the outbreak.

Bad optics, as they say.

It's the same with Fort Detrick which was shut down for failing protocols, and the reason why is suppressed for National security reasons.. Why would they shut it down if nothing had leaked?

Everyone knows best.

Anyway, I'm really really surprised at the lack of change in behavior here where I live. People are still out and about. People are out shopping. Walmart parking lot is full. Construction still going on at the giant Amazon warehouse near our business. I went to Home Depot the other day, the garden center because it's basically outside, so I figured it might be safe if I stay away from everyone and then wipe off everything I touch afterwards. People were there shopping casually. Strolling around. My next door neighbors haven't changed any of their behaviors and they are no dummies. An accountant and nurse, 80 and 75. A navy doctor, 75. Two professors at UF, 65 and 65. A former regional manager at K-mart, 77. I talk to them from a good distance in my front yard, they all still come and go all day long, go for walks together and so on. We are the uneducated idiots here and we are the only ones that seem to be careful. Maybe they know better than us.

Older people don't seem to care in the slightest.

My 80 year old father.. A recent cancer survivor and diabetic is adamant that only 'frail' people (he used more emotive words than that) are at risk.

He's delusional, but he can't be reasoned with. My fear with him is not so much that he gets it, because he's so arrogant he'll probably survive, but that he gives it to my mother.

On Hvar, there's a lot of denial of the reality, as well, as it's not officially here yet. Friends are still planning for a full holiday season, even though anyone who enters the country is being quarantined at their own expense.

I think it's so far out of how we've become accustomed to live, that people can't even comprehend it.

I work on evidence, not conjecture.

I don't know where it came from, I'm not arguing either way, just saying I know the sources of information that I am more likely to believe.

I'm open to any theory or explanation - I would just like people to have some evidence to their argument before they present it to me.

I think it just annoyed me when an office manager for a fashion company stated with unwavering confidence "It's definitely not from bat soup, it's from the lab" without bringing any kind of evidence or reliable sources or information to the table - All because she saw it on Facebook.

No, the doc hasnít affected me as I watched it at the end of my night. So any feelings Iíve had were built up prior to that, for different reasons.

Basically, that documentary dealt with fake news being spread on social media, alt websites and gaining steam ó I.e., pizzagate, the birther movement. Stuff like that, and itís impact on int victims.

And Libby - as far as being ageist, Iím not, and I treat no one differently. Ever. But I canít help not , when youíre working with the public, to see a person whoís in the so-called ďdanger zoneĒ and not feel a little wary. This is what weíre being told. Otherwise, I try and keep my distance from everyone.

I wish I could write. Iíd like to.

I can see Matthew is one of those of those guys who thinks critical thinking and evidence based science is the be all and end all... well answer this Steven Hawkins, since when did facts prove anything???

It doesnít take an Einstein to realise that all the conjectural evidence points to leaked bioweaponry!!!

Oh, to that I can totally relate. With my fb feed I would want to participate in a contest of most aggravating fb friends.
