Update from California:

So, daughter and son-in-law ended up having to go to the ER last night. They have all of the virus symptoms and last night she started coughing up blood.

The first one they went to near their apartment turned them away. They were at capacity and basically said - good luck.

The second one had a tent center set up. They for there oxygen levels checked, temperatures taken, and were scheduled for chest x-rays assuming they could wait around outside in the cold for ten hours - there was a ten hour backlog.

No test despite displaying all the system because the hospital only had a few left and they had not traveled outside the country.  Yes - here you still have to have had traveled outside the US to get a test. Despite the fact that now the US has more than double the cases of South Korea which ironically is one of the countries you could get a test for if you traveled there. So tired of moronic rules. Just say we ain't testing and you are presumed to have the virus. To say you had to travel when we are LIVING in one of the most infected areas is insane. Just fucking say no tests are available

GOOD NEWS

Both of them are feeling better today. Still coughing - but appetite starting to return so I think they are on the mend.

Whew! Scary business, Dave.
Very happy to hear they appear on the up.

Oh wow, Dave!!!!!!!! I'm glad to hear they are feeling better. You should probably stay away from them though. Considering age and such.

Scary thing is now they say that men are twice as likely to die from it than women. I worry about my husband.

My daughter-in-law, the midwife, had a woman come in yesterday to have her baby. She was sick. They asked her all the questions to find out if she had Corona. She said no to all the questions that would check one of the boxes. After the baby was born, she mentioned that yes, her cousin had been tested positive!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!! This put all the staff at extra risk! People that are already working more hours than safe.   >

Oh wow what a cruelty. She’s been exposed, she might be a carrier! And she’s out there delivering babies... wow.

What? She forgot that bit? Crazy.

Pia, are you and your husband in self-isolation?
Have you any charitable organisations that can shop and drop for you?
It's the one thing here that I'm impressed with. Mum got three unsolicited calls with offers to do this.

Dave,

So glad to hear they’re doing better! The ordeal they, and probably countless others, have gone through is scary. I so hope they continue to improve.

Another day in the books. I find myself walking around a good deal of the time with what feels like butterflies in my stomach. It's a nervous kind of excitement (emphasis nervous) that you might feel when something good is about to happen. I'm guessing, however, that it's anxiety.

It all feels so surreal. Like the days immediately following 9/11, just different. I grew up on Long Island, some 30 mi from NYC, so 9/11 happened literally in my backyard, so to speak. It's kind of like you're just walking around in stunned disbelief, thinking that there's just no way this is real.

At some points my day feels almost normal. I'm at the supermarket. The convenience store. The sun came out after an early rain and everything seemed okay. My wife's a real trooper, though. She doesn't dare let on to anyone how nervous she actually is. And I get it, but I don't. It just confirms my suspicions about her all along: She is not human!

I agree, Steve, it is incredibly surreal. As was 911, even for us on the other side of the world. I can only imagine being there during that time.

So... They've just announced our iconic Bondi Beach is closed. People were sharing the public facilities - loos, and showers. And just being too close for comfort, or at least pandemic, anyway.

...

I wonder how Andrew is? He just moved to Sydney...

Lib, the Bondi one was more to do with the 500 max in one place lol. When the lockdown starts - hopefully it doesn’t but I’m not holding my breath - then no one will be at the beach. And in another month it will be getting chilly in Sydney I guess lol.

I read an interesting comment on a forum the other day - the advent of the virus means an end to the political correctness that has ‘infected’ our world the last few years. And someone mentioned that reality tv and other rubbish entertainment will vanish if things go completely arse up. After we get back to ‘normal’, people won’t be wasting their money on frivolous things I imagine, especially the ones without jobs. It may be a surreal new lifestyle for us all

Dave, great to see you fam is better. All the best to you all

Yip. Stevie, did you see the Minister on camera live at Bondi with his officers huddled in for the shot? Now, I think that's a bit ironic when you're preaching spatial awareness.

What lockdown will entail I don't know and I'm not sure I want to.
On your other point I remain sceptical as to a new normal. Be interesting to see if anything changes.

No I don’t watch any of this on tv Lib lol

I actually know what a lockdown means as a customer at work the other night told me that govt friends txted her and it was gonna starts last Thursday the 19th. Obviously it didn’t but the govt have it prepared at some stage

Thats when all non essential shops and businesses close.  Only supermarkets, banks, servos etc open .   Not sure on restaurants and fast food - prolly be shut.  You can only leave home to get food or if you are working in one of the above - that’s me lol     The lady showed me the text    It was legit as other people have said they heard of this from connected friends too

Dave, glad to hear things appear to be on the mend. Have you had physical contact at all? The incubation period of the virus is around 10 days, which is why I thought I had gotten away with it when my gf and kids were almost well. I went down last. I even jinxed myself as two days before I went down, I mentioned my heavy weed consumption protects me from viruses. I was so confident too.

Steve, sorry to hear you lost your job... but maybe your boss is telling the truth. With all the panic-buying, it's hard to imagine businesses, aside from pubs and restaurants, not doing well.

Penoyer, how do you know you had flu and not coronavirus?
