Wonder if many of us will use this time to actually write more... and hopefully not loads of virus/zombie/apocalypse stuff.

I don't think this thing is dangerous to society as a whole. It will likely kill a million people (in the UK out of 65 million) but the rest of us (counting myself amongst the 'us') will survive and adapt an immunity. Unless Coronavirus mutates again and then we could catch it again.

My main concern is the powers the government is taking and we are giving to them due to this fear. In Spain, police are stopping people to ask them where they are going, and you must carry ID. What does that have to do with preventing the spread of a virus that is, sooner or later, going to infect everyone anyway?

They're closing businesses and stopping people from going to work... they're deliberately impoverishing the working class.

This virus cannot be stopped, it can merely be delayed... why destroy healthy people's lives too?

I don't think it is the death rate that has governments concerned. I think it is when they die that is the concern.

Like in the USA, we have about 1 million hospital beds. Now, many of those are already in use. Let's say that 30% are vacant at any one time and you have 300,000 available beds. Once that figure is overwhelmed with the virus cases, then not only will virus deaths escalate (keeping in mind that the current death rates are with treatment - that will go up with no treatment), but death rates from strokes, heart attacks, asthma, etc will also increase due to the unavailability of beds.  Add to that, the limited number of ventilators, medical personnel, hazmat suits, stc.

So. long winded way of saying that I tend to agree with you that the spread is inevitable.  I'd like to see more USA efforts focused on what to do given the inevitably of the spread. e.g., how do you get patients from one area with no hospital capacity to the other areas where there is high hospital capacity, should we start immediate training for military personnel in basic treatment procedures, can we ramp up ventilator production  - a WWII like effort, etc. etc. There seems to be too little focus on the logistics of handling the inevitable spread vs. trying to stop it.

Some more information for you guys to digest. You may not realise that four of the cold viruses in circulation today are actually Coronaviruses. So we've all had this before. This is merely a slightly more deadly incarnation. There are other versions too like H5N1, another coronavirus originally only found in birds that once it jumped to humans kills 60% of those infected. It is actually possible to catch this but you would have to be very unlucky. The mortality rate and its debilitating effects means that it isn't very contagious. But, if you get it, chances are, you're toast.

This one, COVID 19, is highly infectious because it is less deadly. With COVID 19, one can be asymptomatic and never display any symptoms until recovery... ergo, never being aware they were ever infected.

Everyone here needs to mentally prepare themselves to get sick. Just as we do when a bad flu is going through the family and we know, sooner or later, it will be our turn to fight. This is no different. Many of us will hardly notice it, but for those who do, especially if you're in the vulnerable bracket, do not panic, remain self-aware... and meditate.

True - but they are not all " Novel" corona viruses. e.g., new with no vaccine. We have a vaccine for H5N1 as an example. But all in all - agree - mentally prepare to be sick.

"What can I do to avoid catching it?" can be a tricky, mental exercise.

I read a helpful frameshift today.  Pretend you've got it.  Then, the question becomes, "What should I do to ensure I do not infect anyone else?"

In terms of daily living, this is a simpler question, suggesting a clear set of behaviors that will minimize risk all-around.

And the answer, of course, is to become a hermit and write a brilliant script.

Quoted from khamanna
I am in Brooklyn New York, my daughter stays at a dorm in Manhattan and my mother (73) is in Baku, Azerbaijan.

I pray nobody gets sick as I wouldn't know what to do. My mother lives alone.

Now my daughter is stubborn about moving in with me. She goes to school as she's a musician and has to practice playing and composing. The school stopped its in-class activities but she still goes. And she says a lot of kids still come as well.  She started to understand the seriousness of the situation just now but still refusing to move in with me. She has a keyboard at home, which we'll take to my place in case she'd want to come for a month or so. But she doesn't like that thing. She wants the real piano.
I don't know who to worry about, my mother or my daughter.

Khamanna,

We're in the same boat.  The Fat Kid is going to stay on campus until the last minute before returning home.  He is generally pretty responsible and realizes if he gets sick, he'll have to say in his room.

Max,

Interestingly, there has  been a marked decrease in script submissions last week and this week.

The whole point of this thread is that you don't worry. Everyone is going to get it so pointing out the spread does not help anybody. This is just a bad flu. Most will survive, so let's all look forward to this thing being over and getting on with our lives. Probably best to get it now and have done with it. But, it depends on your personality. When there's a fight to be had, I'd rather just get it over with. I'm not checking my movements at all and I've debated furiously the closing of the chess leagues I'm a member of.

However, stupidity and fear are rife amidst the barely-sentient majority. So, we're all fucked as a result.

Well I put my foot down and she moved in with me today. Might be she just realized we have to stick together this time. I used a number of tricks, promised to cook together and watch plenty of operas. Man am I going to regret the last one.
But I’m glad she’s home.

I'm trying the 'ignorance is bliss' option but Covid-19 is the only thing showing on TV at the moment.

And the bare supermarket shelves prove I can't seem to stay in this state of denial.

I just noticed this:

https://qz.com/1819462/universal-is-releasing-its-current-movies-online-because-of-coronavirus/

I hope it applies to Oz.
... Cause I really wanted to see The Invisible Man today but Hubby voted: No.

You should have gone by yourself and then come home faking a terrible cough - you know, just to mess with him

I'm about the get a $$$ screwing.

Supposed to to to Hawaii April 3rd. Bought tickets for my wife, daughter, me and son-in-law and rented a beach front condo for ten days. Cost around $10Gs.  I bought travel insurance for all of this (about $500 in total). So, thinking that they may ban domestic air-travel sometime in the next few weeks started looking at my what if I have to cancel options.

Well, turns out there's a clause in the insurance contract that says they do not cover any cancellations due to epidemics. WTF???? So, I'm covered if I get sick from this thing, not covered if I can't travel because someone else might get sick. Doesn't seem right.  Anyway - working on some kind of credit with the airlines - right now their only option is a re-booking within a time frame  that doesn't work for me - but the condo folks are going to stick me for the bill whether or not I can make it.

I need a bail out!

That sucks BIG time Dave! I'm supposed to go on a cruise with my daughter and granddaughter Oct 4th. I don't have to pay in full until July, but now they're saying this virus most likely will come back in the fall again. I won't lose a lot of money if I cancel, just the deposit, but still. This will have long term devastating effects on some industry, I think.
