Neurologist here. I work at several hospitals in Florida. This is a virus we should all be concerned about. Death rates are not only dependent upon comorbid conditions but also viral load upon contact. Meaning, if you are young and healthy and are exposed to a high enough dose of the virus, then you can die from it.

Joseph

Hold on, so are you saying that this virus can like "pile up" on you? So, if I get a little exposure today, no problem, a little more tomorrow, not a big deal, and so on for weeks it could eventually add up to a deadly amount?

Fruits can be a little dicey, but veggies are fine because you can cook them in stews or in crock pots with meat and such. no virus is ever surviving that.

Oh yeah I meant I donít buy for raw consumption. I cooked all the spinach for that reason

Here's something bizarre for you all. An ice cream truck came by my son's house today. Lots of bored kids bought ice cream...

Pia, we had exactly the same thing happen last weekend. I looked at Hubby and said, what? I can only assume no soft serve was on offer, only pre-packaged. Still thought it very odd.

Nope. Scooped ice cream. Not sure how this company would be considered essential. Maybe under the restaurant thing? I don't know. I'm very confused about the rules. Wear a mask, but you don't have to. Stay home, unless you need to go somewhere...

I know what you mean, Pia. Mask or no mask... Then medical info came out that a bandanna, scarf or blanket would be better across your face than nothing too... I think it's clear not enough is known yet.

Scooped ice-cream? Now, that is bizarre.

No. It's a dose dependent thing from the initial exposure. If you are exposed to a lot initially, then the severity of your illness will likely be worse. If you are exposed to little and survive then you should be immune (for this round anyway). The docs who are dying are the ones being exposed to direct aerosolized virus from intubations, oral procedures, breathing treatments, etc.

This is the way vaccines work (mostly). You receive a small dose of virus or attenuated virus and live. One hopes that once you clear the infection, you will be protected from future infections. We don't know if this will mutate or how fast and whether prior infections will infer some protection.

Obviously, many other things play a role like age, comorbid conditions, etc.

Death rates are not only dependent upon comorbid conditions but also viral load upon contact. Meaning, if you are young and healthy and are exposed to a high enough dose of the virus, then you can die from it. While your city or town may not be like New York right now, this virus is unforgiving. It will spread quickly and overload the local medical facilities rapidly. Resources are limited and when they are used up by sick patients... well, then all bets are off. This thing scares the shit out of me and I am not scared easily by infectious diseases.

This is the perfect virus.

Wear masks (if you have them) when out in public, stay out of public spaces unless necessary for the next 2-3 weeks. Wash hands obsessively. Do not get complacent. Don't expect us doctors to save you if you are sick. We cannot. We will do our best but we do not have a reliable treatment for this. These are not normal times. Be safe and take this time to write the next big thing. If anyone has specific questions, I'd be happy to try to answer them. Joseph

WOW! Thank you so much.-A

The UK is talking about creating a virus apartheid, whereby you're only allowed out of your house if you've already had the disease and recovered.

Yet another one of these absurd mixed messages, whereby you're told to isolate and socially distance, but you're only ever going to be allowed freedom if you catch the disease.

At some point people are just going to have to take it out of Government's hands and start ignoring them. If you're sensible, you're going to get punished. It's going to be better to ignore the advice, try to catch it and recover, or face an indefinite period under house arrest.

Congrats to the Swedes for not getting themselves in this ridiculous situation.

My cousin passed away from the cerebral hemorrhage yesterday. It is forbidden to attend funeral. We also can't stand by her family. Death is very difficult in this condition. I hope scientists and doctors can find exact cure asap.

Take care of yourself.

As I study the numbers trying to understand how this spread works and it doesnít make sense to me at all. Some countries should be withholding the info I think.

I'm in New York, I have a close doctor friend and one other good friend's husband has a pharmacy at a hospital in NYC.
What they say is - they see patients of all ages. My doctor friend started working double shifts and it's still not enough. They are urging her to work 12 hour shifts and she agreed but now says that she has hard time taking it mentally.

They are shipping doctors from AZ , giving away visas and offering very nice pay.

So health care system here is suffering big time. They built a tent hospital at Central Park too.

I now know personally someone who lost the battle to the virus. The guy didn't show many symptoms but tested positive. There was some insignificant coughing. He developped some fever and bad chest pains the next day. They rushed him to a hospital and he collapsed in the drive way. That's a true story about someone I knew.

Btw, I started washing cartons bottles etc. And I'm not buying any loose leafy veggies or fruits and such. This is the worst time to get sick. I mean it's never a good time but better later as opposed to now. Not that I want to get sick

Sorry about your friend - keep safe.

Hmm.

Hadn't heard that before but is certainly makes intuitive sense. Guess kind of like if I has a small fire in one room of my house I'd have a better chance of putting it out before the house burned down. If I had that same small fire in several rooms at the same time - I may not get to them by the time the house in engulfed.

I wouldn't count on Sweden lasting on its current course much longer:

Talked to my daughter in VA this morning. I think a lot of people are already starting to ignore the isolation guidelines. She said the neighborhood playground is busy and the neighborhood teenagers are meeting every day and night by the tennis courts.

My 80 yo naighbor went to the Farmers Market this morning and bought a lot of produce. After that he went to Publix to buy other stuff. He comes and goes at least 10+ times every day...
