I just came across this article on Moviehole.net - let's hope E.T STAYS home!!!!

Quoted Text
20-something years after their pinkies first touched, beer-guzzling Halloween-loving E.T The Extra Terrestrial and cutesy-pie Gertie are eyeing a re-team.

Steven Spielberg and Drew Barrymore have apparently been discussing a possible sequel to his 1982 blockbuster "E.T", something he said he'd never do. Apparently, it's the Charlie's Angel who has coaxed captain big-bucks into re-considering.

"Drew has spoken to Steven about it", says SouthFlorida.com. "Although he thought she was joking at first, he's actually giving it serious thought. Drew thinks the world needs another feel-good movie like 'ET' right now and she's prepared to work with Steven to make it happen".

In the new film, ET would meet up with his now-adult friend Elliott as part of a desperate bid to save his alien race from being wiped out.

Besides Barrymore, it isn't known how many of the original stars - which also included Dee Wallace-Stone, Henry Thomas, Peter Coyote, C.Thomas Howell and Erika Eleniak - would be involved. I'm confident that if it's not Dreamworks decision - the not-so-busy originals would be keen for a reprise.

A few years back Spielberg re-released the original "E.T", and was asked at the time whether he'd consider bringing the Condom Full of Peanuts back for a second stint.

"I thought about doing a sequel in the intoxication of the success of E.T. [but then] realized it's a very perfect story."

Spielberg continued, "It ended exactly where it should have ended. There is no postscript to it. If people are hungry for a sequel, they should go see this 20th anniversary re-release, because there ain't gonna be one."

Moviehole chatted to a couple of the film's original stars - Dee Wallace-Stone and Erika Eleniak about a potential sequel.

“When you make a sequel to a classic, it isn't classic anymore. ET is a classic,” explains Wallace-Stone.

“One can only speculate why a sequel has never been done. The film was so amazing and really a piece of film history. Sometimes sequels have a hard time living up to the original, although, if anyone could do it, Steven Spielberg could!” adds Eleniak.

After the success of the first film, Spielberg penned a treatment for a second, "E.T 2 : Nocturnal Fears" which had some evil aliens, led by a chap named Korel, invading Earth. Guess which STD-user comes to the rescue?

I personally say to fans - don't hold your breath, but Barrymore may be pretty persuasive (I don't know about you - but it wouldn't take much coaxing to get me into a tub full of baked beans with her) so you never never know.

Sounds good, I never really liked the original but I haven't seen it in about 8 years so I'd have to watch it again to be sure.

I think that premise could work because I always wanted more out of ET and now they have technology to do it.

I want an E.T. sequel.  But I want it to show more of the aliens, and a large chunk of the movie should take place in a spaceship, or in space, or on an alien homeworld.  And at some part of the movie, a rare celestial event that all of the aliens were waiting for comes but E.T. decides to miss it as he turns his back right before it starts, and runs toward Barrymore's character to heal her from some ailment.

The one small problem with that is can we believe it? ET on earth was believable but if we're taken to his homeworld can we still say "This could happen" because if what science has taught us is right we wouldn't be able to live on other planets without some special suit with oxygen in it.

Though if ET could breathe our air maybe where he comes from has the same kind of air ha-ha

You just answered your own question.  But you know that.  To me, the appeal was the mystery about the aliens.  Not showing the inside of the ship was a cop-out.

I am so surprised you both are into the idea of E.T 2! I thought for sure the reaction would be not to mess with the original masterpiece!!

I hope they don't release it at thte same time as Deuce Bigelow:  European Gigolo.  It may confuse people.  The main characters look too much alike.

Evil, Phil, evil!! E.T is soooooo cute!

I have 3 dolls... had... only have 2 now come to think about it   One talks and his finger glows up! I'll have to go back to Universal Studios in Florida now to get another replacement doll!

Ho-hum

Actually, there is something rather sexy about Rob Schneider...

I have an ET doll as well ha-ha it's a Teddy bear from my childhood but I still have it.

It's not that I'm soo into it, it's that they are already making thousands of sequels that screw with the originals that I'm thinking what's so wrong with 1 more?

Sometimes I would just rather read fan fics of some films and shows and not worry about the film industry, I'm tired of bulls*it politics running an industry that can't even make a good film not based on a famous comic book artists material.

I think a sequel vwould ruin the whole aura surrounding E.T.

Itd be like what Disney did by making all those crappy sequels to its classics.  you know, like "cinderella II: dreams come true" and the lion king 2.  it put a nasty smudge on the original classics.

I think there are ways to do a sequel that will preserve the integrity of the original. Spielberg has had some great movies, but his sequels haven't been that hot. Sometimes he churns out a decent product, but usually, his sequels are duds. They should totally ask James Cameron to help with it. Talk about a sequel master.

One problem with going to E.T.'s homeworld is that E.T. is no longer E.T. He was called that because it was just what he is. On his homeworld, he won't be E.T. anymore. He'll be whatever his name is. Of course, this can be salvaged (sort of) if Elliot or whoever becomes the "E.T." on E.T.'s world. Then again, "terrestrial" is derived from terra which means Earth, so the long shot flings into the netherworld.

It would be trick for this movie to work, and it will be heavily criticized. They would be better off making their E.T. but renaming the characters and passing it off as a new movie. It would probably have better reviews.

I was digging around on the "Treatments" page today and -- lo and behold -- there is a treatment for ET II.  By Steven Spielberg and Melissa Mathison -- two people who will likely have a pretty big say in the development of a sequel, eh?

It's dated 1982.

Those who are interested may want to check it out.

That is such a great idea: having Elliot -- who is now an adult -- go to E.T.'s homeworld and have it be completely alien to him and to us the audience.  And to have Elliot go through being hidden or celebrated, or blending in with other aliens who just so happen to be around.
