I'm really looking forward to this although I have a bad feeling that QT won't be able to pull off a horror. He said his idea was something along the lines of a slasher with a car instead of a knife. Weird.

Rodriguez' sounds great though. He's already done a decent horror movie so I have high hopes for 'Planet Terror'.

Also, why'd they change it to 'Grind'? Isn't the term 'grindhouse' cinema, not 'grind' cinema. At least as far as I know. These guys'd know better I guess.

Two 75 minute horror movies written by Quentin Tarantino & Robert Rodriguez put together as a two film feature. Including fake movie trailers in between both movies.
That sounds really cool.

I also heard that characters from Dusk 'til Dawn will reprise their roles. Such as Michael Parks's "Earl MacGraw" and Danny Trejo's "Razor Charlie".

But I have to agree with James I also wonder if Tarantino can truly scare someone.

It supposed to come out sometime in December.

I've been meaning to update this thread. Turns out that Robert Rodriguez's zombie flick has gone over budget and production has been cancelled for the moment. Tarantino's Death Proof is still filming and on schedule. I'll provide a link later.

To me, Grindhouse films are more about fun than scares.  The type of horror they exhibit, if any, is the unpleasant Devil's Rejects stuff...horrific, not exactly scary.

i'm looking foward to it...i have a hard time believing the studio would fret about Rodriguez going over budget...

the film is going to be a SMASH hit.

I'm actually pretty keyed up to see this, as I'm a fan of new movies that try to replicate a certain feel from previous eras.  I'll further illustrate my point by saying I enjoyed Down with Love and Sky Captain, both films that accomplished this nicely.

After doing a little bit of research, I'm hard pressed to actually classify this as a horror/slasher flick.

I think Mickey Rourke's "Stuntman Mike" is going to be something right out of Duel or Death Race 2000, preferably the latter.

"Bummer news streaming from the Grindhouse forums, with Mickey Rourke – who many assumed was a lock for the role – no longer attached to play a role in Robert Rodriguez/Quentin Tarantino’s “Grind House”.

Since these forums have a few inside links with the production, I’d be willing to believe the news. They’ve been right before.-moviehole

Awww, what the hell!

So does that mean that all of the filming that has been done is going to be scratched?

Well, hopefully he can capitalize on it anyway.  Maybe use Carradine again in a Frankenstein sort of way.

Bruce Campbell needs a mainstream role.

Well, Campbell does apparently appear as Quentin Beck in Spidey 3, which means that conceivably in 4...

I wonder exactly what's going on with Grind House.  It seems like things are a bit of a mess.

A lot of news came out of Comic-Con. First off, Tarantino announced that Kurt Russell would be playing the slasher, Mad Man Mike from his segment Death Proof.

The other big piece of news is that each segment is in fact a real movie, not just one hour each. Viewers will be getting a double feature.  The Death Proof script is 130 pages, Planet Terror is 110 pages long.

A 240 minute movie isn't gonna work. I don't know one person who has the time to give 240 minutes of their day to see this and I don't know anyone who'd want to sit down in a theater for that long.

I don't know. I guess I'd just have to pay one time and go see the first half and then go back later and just be 130 minutes late. ha-ha.

I'll be there opening night. Look at how much money Return of the King brought in and how long was that? 251 min. (special extended edition)

There are going to be breaks inbetween the two films. Between the two segments will be trailers advertising fake films. Tarantino has stated that they plan to shoot fake trailers for a blaxploitation movie, a kung-fu movie, a sexploitation movie and a spaghetti western trailer.

The only one he has confirmed is the sexploitation, which will be for a film titled Cowgirls in Sweden. Also, in an interview with Danny Trejo, he said that he will be in a fake trailer for a movie called They Call Him Machete. Eli Roth and Edgar Wright have been confirmed to direct trailers.-wiki

You’re really underestimating these directors fan base.

Firstly, can't wait for this. Second, Kurt to play a part in a Tarantino movie (his segment anyways) will be like dreamland! And for two full length films to be joined into two would be crazy... they must have to cut them down a little surely...

Kurt Russell will be awesome!  This is going to be like Escape From New York all over again.  I'm definitely going to see this.

About the length...I heard the death proof script is 130 pages, but apparently Tarantino is claiming it won't equate to 130 minutes of film.

Nova!  Nova!  Looks like maybe a '68 or so.

I wonder if Stuntman Mike resurrected it from Monster Joe's truck and tow, cleaned out the rest of Marvin's face, gave it a new paintjob, and made it "death proof".

Looks pretty kickass though.

EDIT:  Funny, the car on the poster looks like a '69 Camaro.

The poster looks like a 66 or 67 Camaro Rally Sport and the stunt car is a 67 Chevy Nova SS.

I know someone who has one, it says Kiss my SS on it.

No way, the back is too round.  The 67 has a squarer back side.

Here's some pics

Found another side view pic of the "movie car" as well.

Maybe they're using more than one. That last pic looks like a 69, 70 or 71. Hard to tell stripped down like that.

No argument, just something to talk about.  I'll agree that late 60's/early 70's Novas have very similar bodies.

Pretty smart choice though, if they're planning on destroying a few, since they only go for a few grand apiece, unless they're using fiberglass molds.

Stop whatever you’re doing and watch the first trailer for Planet Terror right now. Not sure how long the trailer will be up, looks like a rip from comic-con, that someone threw onto YouTube. Great trailer despite the poor video quality.

Woah.

Thanks so much for giving us the heads up NiXoN. That trailer was absolutely incredible. Rodriguez is one of the great innovators in the filmmaking industry at the moment, along with George Lucas and James Cameron.

Planet Terror looks absolutely amazing. Just incredibly stylized and very well made. This movie is going to be an absolute blast. I can't wait for a Death Proof trailer as well. This will just be awesome. Can't wait.

That teaser is amazing. Rodriguez is a good filmmaker, especially in terms of the visuals and Tarantino is obviously a master of his craft. This is high on my list of anticipated movies of 2007 and I will be first in line to see this baby. I think it's about time audiences got another dose of Tarantino. He's even said he thinks this could be the best script he's ever written (I can't remember where I read that, or if I ever did).

Anyway, cool trailer. Love Rose McGowen with the machine gun for a leg. What a cool touch. Rodriguez sure does have a flair for weapons, as can be seen in the El Mariachi trilogy.

Probably not as exciting as news regarding the main features but interesting nevertheless...

According to IMDB, in addition to Tarantino and Rodriguez, Eli Roth, Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead), and Rob Zombie are directing the fake trailers in between Death Proof and Planet Terror. Roth's segment is called "Thanksgiving." Zombie's is called "Werewolf Women of the S.S." and stars Nicholas Cage and a handful of Zombie regulars... sounds absolutely trashy. Perfectly fitting IMO .

Cool. I knew that Eli Roth and Rob Zombie were doing faux trailers, but I didn't know that Edgar Wright was involved. Huge fan of Shaun of the Dead so it should be pretty cool to see what kind of stuff he comes up with.

Also, has there been any Grindhouse 2 talk yet? Knowing Robert Rodriguez (who can't leave anything alone) there will be one. I read somewhere that there was some talk of it already, maybe making movies out of the fake trailers that they're doing for this one. Just what I heard but has anything been confirmed yet?

Music plays a major role in any Tanantino film; in most cases he has the music picked before the film every shoots. Here is a press release from Maverick Records, the folks responsible for putting out the Death Proof soundtrack.

Quoted Text
MAVERICK RECORDS TO RELEASE SOUNDTRACK TO QUENTIN TARANTINO’S DEATH PROOF ON APRIL 3RD

Death Proof is Acclaimed Film Director Tarantino’s Highly-Anticipated Half of Exploitation Double-Feature Grindhouse

Burbank, CA — Maverick Records will release the soundtrack to Death Proof — Quentin Tarantino’s half of the new exploitation movie double feature Grindhouse — on April 3rd, three days before the two films hit theaters on April 6th. The second film, Planet Terror, was directed by Robert Rodriguez. In between the two features, trailers advertising fake films, directed by Eli Roth and Rob Zombie, among others, will be shown.

Death Proof follows Austin's hottest DJ, Jungle Julia (Sydney Tamiia Poitier) as she sets out into the night to unwind with her two friends Shanna (Jordan Ladd) and Arlene (Vanessa Ferlito). Covertly tracking their moves is Stuntman Mike (Kurt Russell), a scarred rebel leering from behind the wheel of his muscle car, revving just feet away.

The soundtrack includes classic songs from the ’60s and ’70s, such as “Jeepster” from British glam rock band T Rex, “Staggolee” from San Francisco blues band Pacific Gas & Electric, “Down In Mexico” from doo-wop legends The Coasters, and “Good Love, Bad Love” by Stax R&B legend Eddie Floyd. It also features a haunting composition, entitled “Paranoia Prima,” from legendary Italian film score composer Ennio Morricone. The songs are interspersed with dialogue voiced by the actors including Russell, Rose McGowan, Eli Roth, and Michael Bacall.

The music perfectly captures the feel of the exploitation films that became popular in American cinema in the late ’60s and ’70s. With their explicit sex and excessive violence and gore, the films were mainly shown in inner-city theaters, called “grindhouses,” usually as back-to-back double features. “I grew up watching those type of movies and I loved them,” Tarantino says in Grindhouse: The Sleaze-Filled Saga of An Exploitation Double Feature. “The whole grindhouse experience, where you would see two horror films in these low ghetto theaters. Robert and I had the idea to actually do this film that is closer to a grindhouse ride and recreates the experience in one movie and in the best possible version ever presented.”

To watch teaser trailers and get more information about Grindhouse, please visit http://www.grindhousemovie.net.

The track-listing for the soundtrack to Quentin Tarantino's Death Proof is as follows:

    (Film dialogue is in italic).

“The Last Race” — Jack Nitzsche
    “Baby, It's You” — Smith
    “Paranoia Prima” — Ennio Morricone
“Planning & Scheming” — Eli Roth & Michael Bacall
    “Jeepster” — T Rex
“Stuntman Mike” — Rose McGowan & Kurt Russell
“Staggolee” — Pacific Gas & Electric
“The Love You Save (May Be Your Own)” — Joe Tex
“Good Love, Bad Love” — Eddie Floyd
“Down In Mexico” — The Coasters
“Hold Tight - Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich
“Sally and Jack (From the Motion Picture Blow Out)” — Pino Donaggio
“It's So Easy” — Willy DeVille
    “Whatever-However” — Tracie Thoms & Zoe Bell
“Riot In Thunder Alley” — Eddie Beram
    “Chick Habit” — April March

Three new images from Rob Zombie's "Werewolf Women of the S.S.", his faux trailer playing between Robert Rodriguez's "Planet Terror" and Quentin Tarantino's "Death Proof" According to Fangoria, the faux trailer features Nicolas Cage as Fu Manchu, Udo Kier as SS officer Franz Hess, and Zombie's wife, Sheri Moon Zombie, and Sybil Danning as SS officers/sisters Eva and Gretchen Krupp.

Hahaha.

That looks pretty cool.

These trailers are going to be as awesome as the movie.

I also heard somewhere that the fake trailers could end up being the basis for future Grindhouse features. Hopefully they'll make more because this look really awesome.

Heard they were splitting Planet Terror and Death Proof up in countries outside of the US and Canada (Kill Bill style). I checked and I don't think they're doing it here so that's a relief. I think the UK has had them split in two though. Poor guys.

I see the S.S. but where's the werewolf women? Guess we'll just have to wait and see.

BTW, are these photos from Fango's website or the mag itself?

Watch Eli Roth's Faux Trailer 'Thanksgiving' over at IGN.

edit: The trailer is really graphic, definitely not for the younger members.

Michael Biehn is in Planet Terror - AWESOME! Big Biehn fan here. I also heard he's rumored to have a role in the new James Cameron movie  "Avatar"... which would reunite him with Aliens star Sigourney Weaver.

That was amazing! It looked exactly like a trailer for an exploitation film from the '70s, complete with repeating the title of the movie over and over again. We get it already, haha! Wright's and Zombie's trailers look great as well (Nicholas Cage looks rather nuts for, well... Nicholas Cage). Unfortunately, this has confirmed my fears that Rodriguez and Tarantino are more concerned about capturing the grindhouse look (grainy screens, missing reals, etc.) than their own films but considering these are just fake trailers, I don't care. I never thought I would see something like this recreated in my lifetime. Awesome!

I actually thought about that before I watched this one and I decided that were these trailers for real films, I would've watched them without hesitation. Besides, they're not the main attractions of Grindhouse.

And I'm sticking by what I said about the directors caring more about the look than the stories. In one of their earliest interviews about Grindhouse, Tarantino actually referred to their films as "throwaways." This was before either of them had written their scripts but the point is neither Rodriguez or Tarantino planned to put as much effort into their scripts this time around as they figured they couldn't top Kill Bill or Sin City with their following films and would have to wait till next time to try. Additionally, I read in another interview that Planet Terror contains a missing reel. This means that half of the story is quite literally cut out. Back in the '70s and '80s, this was because the reels were damaged beyond repare and had to be removed but that doesn't happen today and would never have happened to a major Hollywood film even back then. That means Rodriguez intentionally left out a major part of the story. He didn't even try to write it. No matter how you look at it, that's sacrificing story for sensationalism.

I'm still going to see the film and I'm sure it's going to be good, I just think it's a shame the directors had to take this kind of approach making it and considering both are two of the most talented filmmakers in the business, they should know better.

Wasn't that the entire point of these 70's and 80's grindhouse flicks in the first place? They're trying to recreate the spirit of those crappy movies you see playing at 3 am when the TV stations have nothing better to put on and they know that only alcoholics and those in sexless marriages are watching.

Seems to me that, in this instance, sacrificing story for sensationalism is about the smartest decision they could make. Let them make up for it in their other movies. I highly doubt that either Rodriguez or Tarantino were going for high art when they thought up these bloody things.

Exploitation filmmakers back in the day certainly put an emphasis on sensationalism but they certainly didn't try to make bad movies. They tried to write good stories just like everyone else, if not, better stories since the content was what made their films sell. They certainly didn't want to see their reels chopped up. That's just the way things turned out. Rodriguez, on the other hand, didn't have to worry about any of the issues these guys faced yet he still put a missing reel into his script. That's not trying to make an exploitation film, that's trying to make a film that looks like an exploitation film. There's a difference. I understand RR and QT are trying to create an experience, not just a film, and I'm all for that but personally, if I go to see a movie and the film unexpectedly stops or jams or a reel goes randomly missing, I'm going to be really pissed off. I think a lot of other moviegoers would feel the same.

On the other hand, next week, I'll probably be gushing over this film with the rest of the Tarantino fanboys. The fact is, as is to be expected, there's been massive hype growing around this thing since day one and hype usually ruins movies for me. I guess I'm just trying to find reasons to criticize the film before I even see it so I can enjoy it like everyone else when it comes out without such high expectations.

Anybody else notice that the music from the Thanksgiving trailer is the same background music that was used in Creepshow?

Anyway, if you want to see a cool/funny trailer for a fake exploitation movie that wasn't done by professionals, check this out....

It's one of the greatest things I have ever seen.

This is the first time that a rumor thread has been reopened after a films release, but a potentially insane rumor has emerged.  Anyone who hasn’t seen the film might find this news interesting. So, Grindhouse was a box-office flop.

And this doesn’t exactly sit well with the Weinstein Company. Its seems that Harvey Weinstein is considering the idea of quickly recuting the film, chopping Death Proof from Planet Terror, throwing in some of the missing footage, and then re-releasing them in the coming weeks.

Sounds made up to me.  Makes you wonder if the studio leaked this just to cause a stir, with the idea of generating a little urgency for everyone to go out and see it before the recut is submitted.  I don't doubt they're above doing something like that.
