Haven't been this stoked for a film since Hostel when I was but a lowly fledging to the writing game. Just waiting for the teaser to get posted was torture.

Absolutely can't wait!

Looks like it could be a good one.   Thanks for posting the trailer.

The Refn/Gosling duo strikes again. Could not be more excited for this. I feel like Refn's starting to hone in his style. Granted, his work has always stood out. But he's learning how to focus it in all the right places. This trailer looks absolutely beautiful. Thanks for posting James!

July 19 release date confirmed by the Weinsteins themselves. Probably gonna hit Cannes too.

Let the countdown begin...

Read the screenplay for this a few months ago and wasn't really impressed by the story or the writing.  But with Drive, I think Refn took what was a fairly mediocre story and transformed into a visually stunning film.  Gosling's presence also helped that movie immeasurably.  So, despite OGF's lackluster script, I think it could be another visual tour de force.

I want to be more excited for this movie but watching the trailer made me less than enthused. I'm sure it's going to be aesthetically pleasing but I feel like this whole art-house Ryan Gosling being a violent bad ass while looking broken and soulless is getting kind of tiring. I hope I'm wrong but I have a feeling this won't measure up to Drive. The last line of the trailer "Do you want to fight?" made me cringe a bit. Either way, I'll go see this, hopefully my low expectations wlil make it all that better.

Those visuals are absolutely stunning. One of the actors in this worked on The Hooligan Factory (a movie I worked on at the start of the year) and he thought this would turn out pretty awesome. That trailer makes it hard to disagree right now.

Looks like another visual feast from Refn.
And yeah, like Drive was for me, this script's a meager meal too.
Trailer's a little too close to Chow Yun Fat territory for my taste.

I'm sure it will be a glorious experience on the big screen.
Let's hope that Refn's style brings more spark to the story.

So, the first look reviews are in from where this played in Cannes this morning.

Some 1 and 5 star reviews... talk about dividing opinions.

This reviewer, whose opinions I usually agree with (he's now actually my 'go-to' reviewer, since Ebert's passing) did give it 5 stars.

I'm still plenty excited. I knew this would divide audiences. That doesn't bother me. I love films that don't play it safe. The reviews I've read thus far have been very extreme and apparently there've been walkouts so clearly that's the case here.

The one thing that does surprise me is how many people have said the film is *not* like Drive. I was definitely expecting a continuation of that style. I was cautious, given that Refn wrote the screenplay himself, but he and Gosling went on to say basically that the film was cut from the same cloth as Drive. What I'm hearing now seems more of a Valhalla Rising situation.

Nevertheless, when Cannes has walkouts, the films are usually nuts. Can't wait for July.

I just don't want Refn to become a parody of himself. I'm worried that Gosling is a little TOO subdued. Obviously this worked in Drive, but we're going to need a little more character this time around.

Still super excited to see it.

I turned "Drive" off after 30 mins...What exactly was appealing about that movie, with lame acting and  80's soundtrack? If had to watch one more freaking "stare off" between him and the girl.

I watched Ryan Gosling in Gangster Squad... I didn't realize he sounded like Pee Wee Herman when he talked. Not a fan whatsoever.

I loved Drive, especially after repeated viewings, though I admit it's marketing campaign was a little bit misleading. I loved the cheesy 80's music and the "man with no name" type character Gosling portrayed.

I'm still looking forward to Only God Forgives... the trailer is very well made. Now, I have a few colleagues who are in Cannes right now, and they had passes to see the film -- apparently, it got a negative response with a lot of boos and walkouts.

The negative reviews out of Cannes reveal that for some, the pace was a little slow and the violence was TOO violent.

Oh well, I'm still looking forward to checking this out, as I'm a huge fan of Gosling and Refn.

Disagree! Awesome soundtrack and visually stunning. I'd expect this from a Liverpool fan.

Agree! This movie gets better after repeated viewings.

Even with mixed reviews, looking forward to this one more than most movies. Thought the trailer looked great.

Some more opinions from people who saw it:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/film/video/2013/may/22/only-god-forgives-refn-video-review

I personally think putting the most violent and disturbing movie in the competition on at 8:30am is ludicrous, and probably didn't help some of the negative reactions to it. If someone doesn't like hyper-violent films at the best of times, they're definitely not going to like them straight after eating their breakfast.

I, too, loved Drive. Although I do agree with what the last guy in the video above says; it was slightly empty as a film. I rewatched it a few weeks ago, the day after viewing The Place Beyond The Pines, and despite thoroughly enjoying it as much as I did when I initially saw it, it does pale in comparison to the emotional depth of Pines.

A load of reviews are saying Only God Forgives is basically Drive but with less emotional depth; it's all style, no substance.

I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

I, for one, am still really looking forward to watching it.

Hmm, I don't like the sound of that.  I'll check it out anyway.

I see a lot of hate for Ryan Gosling -- not only on this board -- but everywhere, it seems.

Regardless, I'll buy my ticket and show my support.
