Hmmm, I wasn't going to weigh in on this, but...

So I posted my script on the Black List didn't get the magic "8" that is supposedly needed to bring you the focus you need.  So while I decide what to do next, I have the script suspended.

Granted, mine is and always was a very polarizing script. Some on this site loved it, some hated it. In the "professional world", we've had a lot of talent who ahve passed on it, however we have a director with 40 years experience attached, and we've had film execs who have graduated Northwestern, and major NY distributors (think MAJOR) who are "fans" of it.

As for the BL review, I actually agree with a lot of the review - or should I say, I agree with some, and the parts I do agree with are very insightful. What I don't agree with are the conclusions, and I felt that the numbers were harsh. The reviewer did say some nice things too.

So at the end of the day?  Posting on the BL is like playing the lottery. Same as writing a script in the first place is.  The trick is to get the RIGHT person to believe in you. Until you do, all of the accolades, and the detractors, mean nothing.

I guess what I would caution against is feeling entitled. Lots of scripts have won awards and have gotten praise - it doesn't mean that they SHOULD be made. I think the BL is a forum for those scripts, the one in a millions, which wouldn't get seen otherwise, that HAVE to be made.

Scam? Absoutely not. Lottery ticket? Yep, like everything else in life...

Thanks for weighing in with your thoughts, ajr.

Yeah, that's it with getting that right person. Even when a producer loves your script it doesn't mean they want to make it.

A lot of complaints have been in regard to low scores not matching the review. If you get an average review you should get an average score. It seems that the blcklst reviewers deliberately score extra low. So, if you should get a 6, you'll most likely get a 4.

Yeah, he convinced me too. It's also made me wonder just how many more this free advert has lured in.

Forever cynical.

Hey Dustin,

Post the link to it here and I'll go check your script out.

Here's mine!

Let me know if I left something out or if it doesn't look right and I'll do the same for you.

The general gist of things reminds of the old insurance company policies...
Always DENY every claim on the first round.

Make them work harder and keep coming back.
In other words -- keep them paying premiums!

I don't see how that's any difference in this kind of business.
Capitalism REQUIRES a company to come up with ways to keep YOU paying.

Another example:
Carson used to guarantee reaching out to his industry contacts...
*IF* you got a coveted -- [xx] Worth the Read.
He even stated that in WRITING in his coverage prices section!

But recently, that effort on his part was removed from the site.
Once the fanbase is there, those incentives are placed further out of reach.
This happened sometime before Shawn got that great review.

Best case scenario -- take what constructive criticism you can and be thankful.
No one's gonna save your script unless they KNOW they can make a mint on it.

Regards,
E.D.

I'll check your script out as soon as I get more time. The script I intend to list has not been finished yet. Just over 70 pages in though. Another week or so and I'll be done.

So...

I spent my $50.00 for the review and got it last night.

I have to say first off, I knew the review would be short and general.

But I have to be honest. I don't think the reviewer had any interest what so ever in the genre my script was in.

The entire review reads like they actually dislike Thrillers in general.

I feel cheated! They claim to marry the script up to a reader who loves the genre of the script submitted. I didn't get that vibe at all.

I took my script off the site and cancelled my account!

Not because of an unfavorable review. I've gotten plenty of those.

But because they didn't back up what they promised.
