It's like one of those 'Win every time' games at the fairground. I'll give him $25 (Sorry $20, you have kindly given us a discount), hand him a duck I just hooked and he'll give me a novelty pencil.

My favourite review on the festival website comes from Jean Barker in May 2018:

"This was a strange festival. They screened the films on a TV in a conference room using the TV speakers. Oddly, they didn't screen some of the shorts they gave prizes to. No photos, none of that usual stuff. They handed out tons of awards - perhaps too many. The animations made based on the scripts were hilarious - but not really representative of the scripts at all because all the female characters wound up wearing bikinis for some reason. I would say this is something to enter to ratchet up your credits, but not a festival to fly cross-country for, so I was glad I already lived in LA."

Yeah, I been getting a bit of the same. But today....something different.
I highlighted the "interesting" part.

Quoted Text
CAREY WESTBROOK IS "PHISHING" FOR SCRIPTS is the libel many screenwriters spread on the simply scripts message board right now.  Talented screenwriters, albeit ignorant uniformed screenwriters, have joined ignorant forces to spread lies and besmirch my character. I did not know what "Phishing" was so I looked it up:

PHISHING phishing/'fiSHiNG/ noun: phishing: the fraudulent practice of sending emails purporting to be from reputable companies in order to induce individuals to reveal personal information, such as passwords and credit card numbers.

The 2019 7th Annual L.A. Neo Noir Novel, Film, and Script Festival is real and has been real for the past seven years.  Visit:

http://www.filmfreeway.com/laneonoir

...and lanneff.com and see for yourself our four and a half stars and dozens of reviews and celebrity documented quotes and celebrity premieres for yourself.  Listen to how excited and happy screenwriters are to be a part of our festival on our radio show on lanneff.com Google search Carey Westbrook.  IMDB search Carey Westbrook.  See how this festival is ranked in the top 100 festivals out of over 5,000 festivals, and hailed by L.A. Weekly as the festival with "The World's Sexiest, Darkest, Crime Short Films."

I encourage you to place this post on the simply scripts message board, and if you go to submit your script through filmfreeway.com/laneonoir in the FEARLESS SIMPLY SCRIPTS WRITERS category, you may enter $5 cheaper than the current rate. Because I know from doing this for several years, most people are too scared to try new things and only four out of 100 writers will even take me up on this offer,  I offer this promise until January 1st:  Every neo noir writer (this includes you and your script, Breaking Eggs) who enters through filmfreeway through the FEARLESS SIMPLY SCRIPTS category, will be accepted into this festival and we will show an excerpt of your script as a movie at our festival.  Enter the festival and see what it's about so that you may criticize it with an informed critique.  You must have a script on simply scripts to be a part of this.  We are making this offer until January 1st.  I cannot make this comment on the simply scripts message board and respond to my critics because I am not a simply scripts member and I no longer write scripts.  I only make Academy Award nominated producers of scriptwriters.  So put some respect on my name.

Happy Holidays,

Carey Westbrook

P.S.:  This letter has been written from this email because many people have placed our lanneff@rocketmail.com email in the spam category.

[face=Courier]So there you go. Carey's seen the skepticism, and apparently feels he's been unfairly criticized. He asks that someone at SS posts his email response to this. Fair enough.

And since he's watching and reading, I will now chime in.

The methods do seem a bit unusual, you have to admit. It is one thing if you simply announced the contest/festival and nothing more,  If that were the case, nobody would be skeptical. They would simply note that the LA NeoNoir is a recent (although obscure) comp. It focuses on a specific genre and sub genre. But... when you make the following statements in our inboxes:

Quoted Text
"Writer's Script" is a great screenplay that speaks to the heart of what people love about film noir / neo noir.  We hope you will submit this script to The 2019 7th Annual LA Neo Noir Novel, Film, and Script Festival

Let's take my script, Breaking Eggs.  I'm pretty sure you didn't read it. Heck, I'm pretty sure you didn't read 99% of anyone's short scripts. Breaking Eggs is a thriller, yes, but Noir it is not. It's more on a psychological horror side. But anyway, it isn't the point. Why, if you have read these scripts, "great screenplay" does anyone have to enter said script in your comp? So, again, you have to understand the skepticism. It's fair. Plus, you send out more than one email to the writers, with the same pitch, only with the titles of our short scripts being what's different. Maybe if it was just one and not jam up the inbox, it might not warrant skepticism.

Quoted Text
How do I KNOW you will win an award?  I am the co-owner of this festival and I say so.

Then everyone who enters is a winner and gets an award? Like a participation award? Now a "discount" for SS members? Our prizes include a tour of The Bradbury? A burlesque show? 100 dollars? (Your site mentions those; not the emails)

And "who" are the "Academy award winners" that you helped? Odd you don't name them on your site.

As for what I meant by "sub genre"---ifor some reason, I just can't help but think of the Erotic thrillers from the mid 90s that cropped up on Cinemax and/or video chains. Low budget, thin plot, mindset in the gutter.

So...you have to be fair with us too. You have to understand the skepticism.
Most folks try for the big comps that have more weight, but niche comps have their place and time.

Peace out.

btw....
NOIR CITY: HOLLYWOOD - THE 20th ANNUAL LOS ANGELES FESTIVAL OF FILM NOIR

Sponsored by Warner Archive, the Art Deco Society of Los Angeles, Hoccomocco Pictures/Thin Ice, Sweeney Todd's Barber Shop, Hollywood Heritage and William M. Paparian, Attorney at Law. Is it the same? You say you are in "seventh year". Right?

Well said. Don't think anyone has any problem with folks marketing their festivals here. The train comes off their rails when there is an implication that they read ones specific script and found that specific script to be worthy of award. That's the dishonest part.

This guy/girl is obviously a fraud. A criminal using the word libel is a funny. Every single email sent to every one of us (I had 4) were cut n pasted save for script title and author name. I also got the same email as Darren.

This guy/girl is another failed writer trying to make a quick buck from other writers. Simple as that.

Reread this shit:

My latest interaction with Carey

Carey

I am happy to place this on SimplyScripts... will do later today with my email content included.

From my perspective, here are my personal thoughts on your approach.

1) I have received emails from you for two of my scripts, it would have been better to just send one as they are exactly the same emails with just the script title changed.
2) I didn’t accuse you of Phishing, but your actions do border on spamming as the email contact is entirely unsolicited, sent to multiple people and for advertising purposes.
3) Promising writers that they will definitely win an award before you have even read the script doesn’t sit well with me at all, where is the ‘competition’ element in that.
4) It seems to me that what you are actually saying is buy an award from me for $25... this isn’t how screenwriting competitions – or any competition – are supposed to be run.
5) For me personally I see absolutely no value in an award from your festival or any other when I am just buying it.
6) I think your are devaluing your brand in taking this approach - I would urge you to reconsider your marketing strategy.

And so we are clear, these are my opinions – I don’t need a response to them.

Best

Anthony

He makes producers of scriptwriters. What a joke. No wonder he gave up writing. I would have too if I was him.

I got a second (non phishing clarification email ) with the $5 off for SSers rate.

I'm most curious about this:

Every neo noir writer (this includes you and your script, Life On A Dime) who enters through filmfreeway through the FEARLESS SIMPLY SCRIPTS category, will be accepted into this festival and we will show an excerpt of your script as a movie at our festival.

An excerpt of my script as a movie?

An excerpt of my script as a movie?

From reading the reviews, they make short animations of the scripts - and from the sounds of it, not very good ones.

Whatever it is, it will be a pile of shite even if they come through.

This puts me in mind of something I discovered a couple years ago about 90% of festivals. I know of producers of short films that set up festivals themselves and enter their own film. Obviously, their film is going to win. Not only that, but they also rake in entry fees from films and scripts while they're at it. It's not a regulated industry, so unscrupulous people can get away with it.

An excerpt of your script as a movie could be shown and proven to be shown, merely by taking a block of text from your script and filming it - the actual text. This is then shown at a venue - could be anywhere - to a certain group of 'witnesses'. Not that they need to go there. How many can afford to sue? Most of the people that fall for this type of scam are poor (more desperate). These guys are bottom feeders... just like most festival conmen... or should that be con-people now?
