I believe Numbers was based on an idea from one of the Twilight Zone episode where a man could see or know how much longer a person had to live. Many many many stories have ideas that stem from TZ episodes. In fact, it would be kind of cool to have an OWC where the challenge would be to re-write an episode into its own new thing.  

As far as Mr. Z or Mr. Caruso goes, I LOVE his writing and my all time favorite short of his is The Tower of Wishes.
