I've heard a lot of positive buzz about the film, starring Sean Bean and Carice van Houten, directed by Christopher Smith. The film was made in the UK, and after seeing the trailers I was looking forward to a US pickup. Sadly, that pickup is from Magnet ...which means it'll go the way of Centerion... VOD before a limited small scale release in the States  > > >
I do know it will be on DVD/Blu-Ray sometiime in the UK next week or two.  

(AS you probably guessed, I'm not a huge fan of VOD/HDNet/Magnet-Mangolia pictures)

But I would still love to read the script of Black Death written by Dario Poloni.


The film takes place in 1348 in plague-ridden medieval England. Osmund, a young monk, is tasked with leading the feared knight Ulric (Bean) and his band of mercenaries to a remote marshland village which has remained untouched by the Black Death. Their quest is to hunt down a necromancer, who is rumoured to be able to bring the dead back to life.

After a journey beset with harrowing pitfalls, Ulric's envoy finds the village, an eerie utopia led by a beautiful witch, Langiva (van Houten). After she offers Osmund his heart's desire, he is forced to choose between his faith and the secrets the village reveals.

Sounds like your basic swords and sorcery movie.  Too bad...  You could've done a lot with some historical accuracy.

After Christopher Smith's last film, Triangle, I had high hopes for Black Death.
Not enough swords and way too much religion and torture for my tastes.
Perhaps the script differs from the film, let us know if you find a copy!

I love titles. And I love this title. Heard things. Bean did extremely well for a fella from Yorkshire with his name. Mind you, he is called Sean...

As far as historical accuracy is concerned Phil, it's hard to meld with story. You know that.

Not necessarily.

The point is that a writer can atleast try.  The actual plague doesn't seem like a significant part of the story.  It's about a good man fighting an evil wizard.  Not much different from Army of Darkness.

I watched this in the cinema a few months back. Don't get your hopes up. In my opinion, it's a very, very average movie and I could count on one hand things that I liked about it.

Okay, you make a good point. I knew Scottish people who were outraged by Braveheart's lack of accuracy. Then a year later you go round their house and they have it on DVD. They also have the soundtrack on CD.

They love it. Just don't admit it.

Take The Doors for example. Whatever Val's up to today he did Morrison better than Jim did. Scenes in there never happened to Ray or Jim. But Oliver was making a film.

You know the craic. It's a fillum, not a documentary.

Don't forget the Mel Gibson statue outside the William Wallace monument.  I'm sure that got a lot of kilts in a bunch.

I wasn't expecting anything along the lines of a documentary.  Still, Black Death may not be the best title.  Maybe Dude With Sword Takes On Evil Wizard Guy.  This is what the story seems to be about.

Wait a second. Dude With Sword Takes On Evil Wizard Guy is already listed in IMDB.  Ben Kingsley and Sarah Jessica Parker starred in it in 2003.
