Just watched this beautiful film again with someone and will write up a review on the DVD soon.

It's loaded with extras on a separate disc but I don't have time to watch them tonight...

Fans of James Cameron will not be disappointed!!

We just got done watching both discs!!!   Here are the extras on the DVD -

Two-Disc Set Contains Both the 145-minute Original Theatrical Version and the 171-Minute Special Edition

"Under Pressure: Making 'The Abyss'" 1-Hour Documentary
Special Subtitle Track Explaining How the Special Effects were Executed

Conceptual Art and Storyboards

Theatrical Trailers

TV Spots

DVD-ROM: Screenplay

DVD-ROM: Bonus Footage

DVD-ROM: Interactive Demos for "Titanic Explorer" and "Alien Vs. Predator"

~

A bargain if ever there was one!

A truly stunning underwater movie which holds up brilliantly considering it was made in the late 80's. The effects are breathtaking and I urge you all to check this out.

*Spoilers*

I bought this dvd a few months ago. I love this film. No matter how many times you see it the scene in the sub whe one of them has to swim and the other...
Just when Ed Harris screams "Noooo!" I seriously get a lump in my throat everytime. My girlfriend and I watched it last night an she still crys. And the 'one way trip' scene.

I remember being a kid in the video store and always seeing the cover for it and always wondering what it was about. When I finally got of my arse and rented it I was speechless. I even noticed the reference to 2001.

The effects and filming are almost as infamous as the stories that surround the shoot. Ed Harris started using the motto: 'No matter how bad it is, its not as bad filming the abyss".

I was always fascinated by the cover art on the dvd/video too, and thought it to be a completely different type of movie till I saw it on TV... then I just had to buy the DVD!

That scene you mention is very emotional. A brilliant film and dare I say, I think Ed Harris at his best?!!
