I watched this last night and absolutely adored it. I thought it was funny and touching and magical and surreal and I now want to join team Zissou and wear a red hat and a blue jumpsuit every day. Oh, and marry Owen Wilson but thats nothing new. Today I talked to a friend that couldn't stand it, she thought it was pointless boring meaningless nonsense. For some reason it restores my faith in film that stuff like this, which won't appeal to everyone and will divide opinion and is unashamedly silly and beautiful, still gets made.
I've had this sitting in my DVD collection for a few weeks now, and just last night I finally watched it with a group of people.
Some people absolutely hated it.
This is not a movie that everyone will like.
This is one of the best movies I have ever seen, and certainly Wes Anderson's greatest picture to date.
Bill Murray is a national treasure. From films like this to the recently released "Broken Flowers" (I'll have a review up shortly for that one as well), he has recently taken on some of the best roles he's held since Dr. Peter Venkman. Albeit, these new roles are much more dramatic then his ghostbuster counter-part, but that is certianly not a bad thing.
Equally funny, beautiful, haunting, and mezmorizing, "The Life Aquatic" stands as a truly wonderful film in every genre imaginable (and that includes the action/adventure category as well). It's been quite some time since I've seen a movie that had me wanting to cry based on a simple special effect alone. Together, with the excellent song "Staralfur," the image of the great jaguar shark is quite a sight to behold, made even moreso by the utter look of absolute amazment plastered onto every member of the cast's faces.
Excellent. Absolutely excellent and painfully, painfully underrated.
I think it's the weakest of the Anderson collection, primarely b/c he didn't write it with owen wilson, but i still LOVE IT. but it's true some ppl don't dig it some do.
This movie gave a new meaning to the phrase "wierd comedy". It is almost a genre by itself. I, too, found it hilarious, though I can definitely see how others would hate it.
Bill Murray is brilliant in "The life aquatic", if only for those silent moments in which he is pausing after a strange or funny line. He is the heart of this movie, I think it is safe to say, and without him there would be little to watch. Owen Wilson acts better I think than I've ever seen him, fitting the role perfectly. The rest of the crew, each with their own twists, are all very well acted, and William Dafoe plays very well as Klaus. Together they make a movie that is strange, but somehow because of that strangeness is hilarious. I think the general mood of the movie, the absolute absurdity of the situations, is what gives this movie its mark. The lack of music in many points is very fitting, since in silence it is easier to appreciate the humor and we look foreword every line.
Well, there are two versions as well: a single disc and a double disc set. I bought the 2-disc one used off of amazon.com for only about fifteen dollars. Not bad considering the Best Buy near me had it for thirty.
