All I must say is that it sucked! I knew it was going to, though, it's what I'm used to these days and movies.
It's not at all what most people would think or what most people were lead to believe it was about. I was rather disappointed in this one. Oh well, DEAD and BREAKFAST still rocks, balls!
"The Exorcism of Emily Rose" was not as good as I'd thought it would be; its very boring at times, not scary enough, unsatisfying ending, and there is a lot of unintentionally funny scenes. But, what I did like about the film was the strong performances.
I did, infact, find the way this film deals with possession more realistic and frightening than "The Exorcist". This is what I imagine a *real* possession to be like, that is due to the realistic and disturbing performance of Jennifer Carpenter(Emily).
This is one of those films that the music cues/score scare you more than the actual scene does, most noticably in the actual "exorcism" scenes which carries into the barn. The director does know how to create tension though and shoots some very chilling imagery. My favorite scene was the "pinned onto the bed", OMG I felt *her* suffering.
I really don't know what it is about this film that I don't like, I think it may be the fact that it is a little TOO intelligent for it's own good, especially it being a horror. I dunno... The dialogue too is laughable, but is delivered incredibly good by the actors.
Overall, very disapointing, but has some good aspects about it.
Damn. I thought it was one of the best drama/horror movies to come out in a while. I seriously was scared when watching it. And not many movies scare me.
I'm easily scared by movies, it's a curse but that doesn't mean that they're any good... (Boogeyman, I'm looking at you) But I thought that this one looked to be good.
That other horror film that's coming out with an R rating looks like it could be an interesting slasher piece.
It's not "jump out of your seat" scary or anything, but scenes like Emily being pinned onto the bed, the spider-eating, and the whole exorcism scene were chilling, but it just mimics "The Exorcist" a little TOO closely.
The biggest problem with the film is that it is too boring, I mean c'mon it clocks in at 2 hours, if they had cut even twenty minutes of this film, it would have been much better.
"The Exorcist" relied on gory shock-value sequences, this one had a few, but it was those little certain scenes(I'm not talking about the entire film) that was exactly the same as in "Exorcist". Though, I do think this film took possession more seriously than "Exorcist".
"I am Lucifer, the Devil in the flesh" <-- Honestly, that whole scene scared the entire hell out of me.
The movie gave me shivers throughout and i did jump. Some at the cheap scares you would say but what could happen. While watching i thought many things and that is what truly scared me during it.
Being a "Based on a True Story" film made this the more chilling to watch. Yes, I believe in things like this could happen and what I appreciated about this film is that it didn't try to answer *your* beliefs, it made you think, it offered two sides to one story and it let you decide on your own in what do *you* really believe.
If you're in the right environment and if you're open to what this film has to offer, than "The Exorcism of Emily Rose" will give you chills.
It gained 4 for being a lot more superior then most movies out today. And also being scary and the acting, plot etc. It lost a .5 for some of the cheesy lines it had.
I was looking forward to this hitting the uk... After seeing some clips on a show and reading the mixed reviews I'm not so sure now... I'll keep an open mind though and will most probably find myself in the cinema when it's out.
Maybe they'll fix some things for the DVD but probably not... What I'd love is to hear the real Emily Rose on the DVD, if she's still alive or is real... That would be like better than or equal to almost any DVD that's come so far this year.
Just to hear the real person say this happened, I heard that one guy from Amittyville Horror and now his son and a whole cast of others are saying it wasn't as serious as the films and the father made it out to be. Something like that, it was on CNN when the film was hitting theatres.
What about family, kids, relatives? It would be cool to get their perspectives on the ordeal. Some people would rather keep entertainment and the real thing separate but I'm fascinated with real life hauntings, possesions especially if they have proof.
