Fulci's masterpiece... This movie is a wild, strange, often bizzare, off beat trip. It's got some of the most disturbing, random, events put on screen and with that some of the most revolting scenes of horror to boot.

Don't let the name fool you, either of them... The Gates of Hell or City Of The Living Dead... they are very different zombies in this one. They aren't your gut munches and they don't act like zombies. Not really and that is a good thing... no, it's a great thing!

The movie starts out in a foggy cemetery where a preacher hangs himself from a tree. We then move up several years later... Where random events of witchcraft and other such happenings are taking place in the erie town of DUNWITCH.

A woman dies in the midst of a cult like ritual and is taken away, not to be seen or heard of again, right? Well until later that is... and it's a bizzare scene in its self.

The movie then sprials into a detective-like story... Much like a lot of Fulci's work, however, this is a different take on it cause the detectives really aren't the leads at all.

Some how the gates of hell were blown wide open and the Preist has come back to command an army of dead... but also extracting his own gory revenge on the town.

The movie is crazy as all hell, let me tell you. It's very vile. Very disturbing at times and the nature of it is kinda brutal.

In the end no one is really safe in this town. No one! These things will appear at random. These thing don't want to eat anything on you... they want to rip your brain from your head with their hands. It's rather painful to watch sometimes.

I think the most shocking scene in the whole movie is when Michelle Soavi and his girlfriend are making out in this van and the preacher rips his brain out of the back of his head and then makes the girl throw up her own internal organs. It's amazing to watch this go down, trust me.

However, there was another revolting scene in here... This time done by a human being. The father of this girl catches his daughter in the garage with "BOB" the creepy low life everyone thinks is a murder but isn't... he's just fucked up. Well, the dad takes it upon himself to skewer this kids face with a drill press thru the cheek, into the mouth... I don't know how they pulled this scene off. You really have to see it to believe it. The drill is spinning inside this, clearly in pain, guy's mouth. It's chewing thru his cheeks and it's just plain awful to watch.

Anyways... in the end... The DEAD are here. A group of people set out to send them back to Hell by closing the gates of hell. The gates of hell just so happen to be in DUNWITCH so they don't have to travel too far either

A must see flick. Watch it with your girlfriend or boyfriend with the weak stomach. It's a strange movie with some of the most disturbing scenes ever filmed but it'll give you two something to talk about, trust me.

4.5 out of 5: Fulci's sand kicker to George Romero's Dead movies. I think Fulci pisses all over Romero, myself, and Fulci's movies tend to be a bit more fun to watch. They are clearly all effects on the surface but don't let that fool you... His movies are worlds deeper than Romero's ever were. In every movie of Fulci's there is a huge underlined theme that goes with them... only he was doing them years before anyone.
