Oh...my...god. Ladies and gentleman not too many people can say they have seen rock bottom, but I have. And it is known as Get Rich or Die Tryin'. Holy god. This had to be the worst movie ever put onto a DVD. I almost feel mad that I have to waste space on this message board but this movie made me so goddamn mad that I needed something, ANYTHING, to vent to.
I'm not even going to go over the plot, because there is none. It's about some urban crackhead that decides midway through his life that he wants to stop selling blow and start rapping. Wow what a story. This movie should be considered a slap in the face to the black viewers it is intended to. Is this how black people really live? They all sell drugs and kill innocent people? That's absurd! I believe this was a semi-biopic for 50 Cent and I have to say that I am ashamed for him. If this is the life he has lived, he is one of the lowest forms of scum on this planet. Drug dealers and murderers should not be glorified in film. I see no point in trying to make it seem like an underdog story, becasue it's not. It's an ignorant decision that people make when they are young and they make this world that much worse to live in.
As for the acting, haha. To this minute, I cannot believe that quite possibly one of the best actors out there today, Terrence Howard, signed his name onto this utter piece of garbage. He is WAY too talented to be even mentioned in the same cast list as 50 Cent, let alone be his sidekick! 50 cent stumbles his way though this film with his annoying ventriliquist like speech and classic dialogue such as "He touch my kid, Ima kill him" and "I got to do me". Joy Bryant was absolutely beautiful in this film and gave me at least something to enjoy while watching, but all of her scenes were ridiculous "pick up" scenes for 50 Cent. This man that she is with is selling drugs, living in a crap apartment with 3 of his friends, and is killing people left and right, all while they have a child together! Give me a break! I really hope Joy Bryant can find better screenplays than this excuse because she is too beautiful to be delegated to parts like this and appears like she could play a wide array of characters and not just the crackhead's loving wife.
As for director Jim Sheridan, I have no idea what he was thinking when he signed on to make this film. Here is the director that has given us the classic My Left Foot, and brings his astonishing direction to this terrible story and it does nothing for it. His angles and scenes are very well shot and some of the shootings seem eerily real. He tried his damnest to make this credible, but I think you need quality actors as well if you are going to make a good movie. I'm sorry Mr. Sheridan. I really am.
The screenplay was pretty pathetic. I had the honor of being able to read it here on Simply Scripts and it is a great example of how you don't need a high school diploma to write screenplays any more. Ebonics is just a bunch of misspelled English words and the screenplay is littered with it. Newbie writer, Terrence Winter, has his screenplay start with a ridiculously long flashback into 50 cent's "early years" and about 45 mins in finally returns to his adult life. I had no feelings for any of the characters except for Joy Bryant. I just kept wondering to myself "are there really women out there like this? one's that will stick around with a crack dealer and murderer when you have a baby in the house?"
My favorite continuous scene by far has to be around the middle of the movie when 50 Cent's character meets Joy Bryant's character after years apart and he takes her to a club. At the club he is fired upon and his friend is hit by a stray bullet. At the hospital, Joy Bryant's character is emotional for 50 Cent's friend, even though they have never seen each other before, and tells 50 Cent she wants to go back to his place. This leads to them being alone in the house at night and they have sex. Word. Note to self, take your girl to a shootout on your first date, she will sleep with you.
ZERO STARS!!!!!! out of ****
I really want to give this a negative. There is absolutely no reason to ever watch this movie unless you want to be angry after. This movie nearly made me yell out loud because it should never have been made.
ARGHHH!
If you want to see a great movie in this "genre" please check out ATL and Hustle and Flow. Now THOSE are great movies.
Was this movie like a bio of his life? If so, they should've got someone else to play his role that way they could have made it OK.
But judging from what I've read about the film it seems that it isn't very hard to get scripts picked up by studios these days. It makes me wonder why good writers (like some of the people on this site) aren't professional writers and directors and actors and people like 50 Cent get to play in a movie.
As a 90s rap fan, I pretty much knew this guy was going to release a DVD and make an attempt at acting. The guy can hardly talk let alone rap, and now he is the main actor in a movie about his life. Wow, he is a drug dealer and got shot 9 times. His records pretty much are awful, beyond Dr Dre;s production the guy is lame and makes ryhmes that a 5 year old could make. I guess thats how rap is now, but wow, it is sad to see it deteriote into this garbage.
50 Cent as an actor, I wont rush to see him. I might watch the first 20 minites on TV but I wouldnt pay to see this guy on the cinema or live.
I found this movie entertaining and good. But, nopt good enough to put on my favorite movie list. It's good in small doses lets say. I could watch if im very bored and nothing else is on. It had 2 out of 10 star acting an all and all 4 out of ten stars. Tisk tisk tisk.
