I just got back from seeing and it looks like Mel Gibson has made another kickass adventure.  This is more along the lines of Braveheart than The Passion of the Christ, and it does equal both in the bloodshed department, this is one very violent gruesome film.

This is kind of a cross between the fugitive and Predator, the story is quite simple.

A small village is ravaged by an evil tribe.  A young warrior named Jaguar Paw takes his pregnant wife and young son and hides them in this pit.  he is then captured along with the rest of the tribe and they are brought to this huge city many many miles away.  The women are to be sold and the men are to be sacrificed to the Gods.

After a few of the men have their hearts cut out and heads chopped off it has come time for young jaguar paw, but right before he is to be sacrificed there is an eclipses, which to these people means the gods have had there filling of blood.  So the rest of the men are to be disposed of.

In the process Jaguar paw escapes and kills the son of his capture, from that point on this movie becomes a chase.  He needs to get to his wife before she gives birth, and before it starts to rain or they will drown.

The cinematography, art direction, costume design are all top notch, this looks like a 100 million dollar movie that was made for a quarter of that.

I have no idea if this movie will be a hit or not, it's all in sub titles, there are no stars, and it is extremely violent, and it doesn't have any Christan themes in it like The passion did, this is just a straight forward action film.

One thing I do hate about sub title movies is that some Twat always feels he needs to read out loud.  A guy a few seats behind us was doing exactly that until someone told him to shut the hell up.  Everyone there started to cheer.

anyways this was a great film, one of the years best.

Haha really? People read out loud? Sub-titles seems like a whole different culture in Anglophone countries.

I finally caught this on DVD last night and boy was I impressed. Although the violence was hard hitting I thought it was absolutely necessary given the subject matter. The characters both good and evil were engaging and the story maintained a high level of suspense through out. However there were a couple glitches here and there, like how natives from completely different tribes spoke the same language and a deus ex machina at crucial point in the film was disappointing. But all in all this was a solid story with great action, unpredictable twists and a satisfying ending.
Once again Mel Gibson has shown that he is a masterful director and my respect for him grew even more when I discovered he co-wrote the script. Mel is definitely a powerhouse in all facets of the film making process.

It's a shame you didn't catch it while it was in theatres, Chris. That's where this movie really should be seen. The scope and scale of this film is just amazing, the look is absolutely stunning. This was on my best of 2006 list and I'm glad I put it there, because this really is a great film. A truly epic story told with break-neck speed and breathtaking visuals. Gibson is a born filmmaker in every sense of the word, and I cannot wait to check out his next flick.

Yeah, that scene on the alter of sacrafice would've been f ucking mind blowing on the big screen; espeacially when the camera showed the POV of the guys on the alter. That was nuts.

I saw it at the theater on a digital projector and it looked great.  The one problem I have though, is the CGI panther.  That stuck out like a sore thumb!  Other than that, not bad...
