Ok so maybe a few years too late for this thread, but I am posting this now because I recently watched Lord of the Rings on Ch4... I told myself I'd never watch any tripe Peter jackson cooked up... But How I stand corrected... I told myself I'd never view these films because of cast and staff!! But boy do I feel like a twat now!!

I sat down a few months ago with my Tamara (love you hun) and I watched all three films... Ok before then I had never even entertained the notion of watching them, but she wanted to watch so did I. I was left stunned and wanting more by the end of the first film, they say a great story teller always leaves their audience wanting more... Now I totally respect Peter Jackson for this great piece of work...

I was left in awe by the end of the first film, I was literally counting the hours until the following Sunday to catch the second. And I am now feeling like a complete fool for not giving these films a chance first time around... A good friend of mine (Conor) Told me I'd like them, but I was a little hasty and told him YEAH RIGHT!! but yes I enjoyed these enthralling 3 hour epics so much that I went right out by week three at the end of the last film and bought myself all three films on DVD...

My question I pose to you all is... did you guys ever hate a film so much you'd not watch it, but sat down and watched? Before falling in love with it?

There are a few films I won't see for their content, but for the most part, I try to never dislike a film before I see it, and I've seen a few. Now, this is not to say I won't rank a film lower than others on my "to watch" list, nor that I won't have a preconceived notion of what I'm getting into, but I've never hated a film without reason before seeing it.

As for LOTR, if you like the theatrical versions that were undoubtedly shown on TV, check out about an hour and a half of extra material by watching the extended DVD versions. They make it even better. I was one who has read the books as well and know how closely they're followed. Sure, some changes here and there for visualness or pacing, but on the whole, a very tight adaptation.

I will say that I had some preconceived notions before recently (finally) watching the Friday the 13th films. I wasn't too far off. The success of these films is not in the plot or award-winning acting.

Not really. I've sworn never to watch films and then once I've watched them I've hated them just as much as I thought I would. Most of the time I wish I could take back the hours I'd spent watching crappy movies. Lord of the Rings is especially high on this list. I don't like these movies at all. There is nothing good about them as far as I'm concerned. The performances are high-strung and melodramatic when they should be subtle and subdued.

Jackson went way over the top with his use of computer animation. I don't know if there's some kind of a technical name for it, but I call it the George Lucas complex. He did things CGI when they could have easily done them with models. I was obviously impressed by the digital stuff though. Gollum looked convincing enough and those big elephants were pretty good, but on the whole I really don't like watching these movies. I don't really know why, but all I will say is: Return of the King winner of 11 Academy Awards? PFFFFFFFFFT. I liked King Kong, however. It had much more of my kind of emotion that LOTR did.

Hahahahaha. It's true, oh boy oh boy is it ever true. I'm a big F13 fan though. I think sometimes it's just fun to sit back, relax and watch a bunch of stupid teenagers get slaughtered. Does that make me sound... you know... sick?

Yeah, but given that it currently has 10 sequels (second only to Bond's official 20 sequels), you're not the only sick puppy out there. Occasionally, in the mix of all the nonsense, you get one that's halfway decent. 6 was almost better than the first one. My opinion.

As for LOTR, it's all a matter of taste. As can be concluded by my writing, I enjoy long drawn-out plot overkill films, so I thoroughly enjoy LOTR as well as the Star wars saga, finding value in the overall plot and its cohesion as opposed to complaints about the dialogue and acting.

I think that's because Part 6 was sort of aware that it was an F13 movie. It didn't take itself anywhere near as seriously as any of the others.

As for LOTR, you're right in that it is a matter of taste. Personally, I don't think plot is anywhere near as important as character stuff. Take The Godfather Part II for example. There are mobsters and murders going along all over the place, half of which I didn't really understand. I watched the movie like four times before I fully understood the machinations of the plot, but I absolutely loved it from the first viewing because Coppola and Puzo got the characters one hundred per cent right. I just didn't feel that in LOTR. But then again, as George mentioned above, I am one sick puppy.

Cheers, Chismeister.
