Across the Universe is a musical based on classic Beatles tunes about a love story set in the sixties during the revolution and anti-war protest. Pretty risky to take on a movie that re-does the Beatles music but this movie succeeds in all that it wants to be.
Musicals are starting to become more common this year and their bound to get even more popular but this movie was definitely a unique experience and it's a fun time. Beatles fans won't be disappointed, in my opinion, I thought the covers were great, I was out buying the soundtrack the next day. I was waiting forever to see this movie and I will admit I had my expectations a little too high but I wouldn't say I was disappointed, it was a great movie. The storyline was no where near original at all but the music made up for that and the unique directing/editing was interesting in that it actually had the effect to make you feel like you were high, as the characters are during the movie. The acting was great, I'm a huge fan of Evan Rachel Wood and she was great and also Jim Sturgess was really good with a great voice too! This movie is lengthy but it's very entertaining and time will just fly by. This movie had a lot of emotion and the characters are easy enough to connect with. You'll most likely have yourself laughing at parts just because of corny musical moments, like a scene where Prudence is carelessly singing during a football game walking right through the football players as they clash/play, but these are just fun and expected. There's a few different subplots during the movie but most people are just looking towards the love story between the main characters and at times I would've preferred they stuck to that more. One thing that doesn't really affect my opinion of the movie but I found was weird was that in one seen where guys are smoking a joint, there's no joint visible but smoke comes out when they exhale, maybe it was CGI'd out to maintain a PG-13 because the movie did get a little risque but still I found it strange! Regardless, Julie Taymor really made this movie something special because the writing wasn't that great but she turned this into a unique movie experience.
Overall, if you saw the trailer and were intrigued you won't be disappointed, if you are a fan of The Beatles music you won't be disappointed but I wouldn't suggest this to everyone. It's definitely a unique movie and not everyone will enjoy it you have to be ready for a different visualization. I'm actually surprised how many kids from my school who are fans of the movie, which is great but I'm pretty sure most of them are seeing it stoned, either way, it's worth the watch! ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE !
I've been thinking about catching this movie as I was a huge fan of Moulin Rouge. I like the fact that it's all Beatles tunes, but on the downside, I was hoping it would have different artists and songs represented. What worked for Moulin Rouge so much was the way they handled the material and the surprise I got when I made the connection to each song featured in the movie.
But, it's good to see these alternative movies to watch. It's a toss up between this one and Into The Wild.
My boyfriend and I saw it last night. Freakin' amazing. There were some iffy parts, at least three unnecessary characters, but no movie is perfect. I can't wait to get it on DVD. For those of you who want the soundtrack, WAIT! A deluxe edition comes out on Oct 23. The one that's out now only has 12 of the 33 songs, excluding the finale. What's up with that?
Loved this movie! i recommend it, but see it with an open mind. (unlike most in my theater)
