I've decided not to preface this review with anything. Frankly, it's not worth it.

...

Well, it was bad. Was it so bad, it's good? ...no. It was just bad. In fact, I'll go so far as to tell people not to see this movie. I came in with as much morbid curiosity as anyone and was not satisfied. Only bored. I can't remember the last time I saw such a dull film.

The birds don't show up until after the 45 minute mark. The first half of the film sets up the characters. I nearly turned it off halfway through. The actors couldn't be more wooden or look anymore like they're reading off que cards and the dialogue is mind-numbingly vapid and overly expository. How about some ham-fisted social commentary on global warming to wipe it up with? You got it!

It's not cheesy. Not funny. It's not even shocking. Isn't the subtitle "Shock and Terror?" In the end, it's just cringeworthy and yet, forgettable. You'd think one of the worst movies of all time would have some vomit-inducing one-liners to take away from it but no. It's just... dull.

When the birds show up, there are, admittedly, a few laughs to be had. The special FX have got to be the worst in history. They look like they were ripped straight from the Deerhunter arcade at your local dive bar. They occasionally fly into things and explode but for the most part, they just "hover," suspended in their separate Final Cut Pro layer, superimposed over more bad acting. It's slightly funny for the sake that despite the poor quality of the acting and writing, there's still supposed to be some sense of danger going on in the story. But as far as I can tell, these birds only "hover" over and fly across you to death.

I did say a few laughs though. The second half is about the same as the first except half the dialogue has been replaced with annoying looped caws, screeches and tinny gunshots.

The two worst scenes occur toward the end of the film. They both serve the same purpose: to imply that birds are attacking fossil fuel users. One is a conversation with an ornithologist and the other, with a grown man who lives in a tree because he loves the environment so much. Both are about the same as listening to an Al Gore seminar if he had no speechwriters or public speaking skills. You'd think it'd be somehow entertaining in a so-bad-it's-good sense but really, it just makes you want to guzzle pills and put a plastic bag over your head.

Oh yeah... did I mention this was all shot on DV? Yeah... Also, the audio levels change practically every shot. Towards the end, there were even some shots that had no audio. "Don't try so hard. It might not come out right." Tommy Wiseau's theory in practice for sure.

So that's Birdemic. As bad as it gets except without the fun or surprise. A colossal failure to deliver a tired, preachy message in the form of a Birds homage (seriously... The Birds and An Inconvenient Truth were the film's biggest influences).

Overall, not worth it. If you're in film school, you'll probably experience the same feeling watching your fellow students' work in your next class. Otherwise, you may or may not take this review as an enticement to see the film. I apologize in advance.

James, c'mon now.  A little harsh, huh?

I'm actually very surprised you didn't find this entertaining in a so horrid it's hilarious way.  Cause, IMO, it definitely is.

The dialogue is cringe worthy in every single scene, pretty much every single line.  The stuff about the main "star's" sale on the phone is just hilarious.  He says something to the effect, "Not only will I do that for you, but I'll also cut the price in half."  Then, the sale is completed, and he tells his bud that he just made a Million dollar sale in those few seconds.  HaHa!!  Hilarious!

How about the CFO in the meeting, telling his few employees that he just sold the company for $1 Billion, and they're all going to be rich, based on the stock options they all have.

Then, he gets instantly financed for $10 Million for his own company.

And, of course, how about his comment about his Mustang, which he says gets 100 MPH.  HaHa!!!

Loved it!  Absolutely terrible in every way possible, but a real hoot.  You obviously didn't listen to my advice on the Netflix streaming thread about drinking as much as possible while viewing, or doing some form of hallucinogens.

The Shock and Terror of this movie is how terrible the movie actually is. And that it has become so popular that it has funding for a sequel.

True I found some parts of this movie dull but I never took the movie seriously enough as to not laugh at its audaciousness.  If this movie is not the worst movie ever made then it is at the very least the prime antithesis of a good movie.  It doesn't seem to work on any level.  I would almost ascribe the filmmaker to genius if I thought he did it on purpose.

And yet it's successful - sort of - go figure.

Birdemic essentially falls into the same category as Asylum or all those dirt cheap SyFy channel creature features that get hated on so much (e.g. Sharktopus, Mega Piranha, etc.). I never thought any of those were funny and hate the fact that they try to come off as ironic and intentionally poor quality. The only things that set Birdemic apart from that crowd were exceptionally bad FX and a really dumb, blatant and profoundly un-eloquent environmentalist message that, as far as I can tell, was supposed to be taken seriously. I may have watched this sober but I'm pretty sure it's not for me.

James, this movie is obviously not for anyone, in a serious manner, but the big difference between this and Asylum or any and all SyFy flicks is that this was seriously, somehow, supposed to be 'serious".  That's where the beauty lies.

The other crap are all basically "pissers".  They're supposed to be bad, ridiculous, terrible, cheesy, whatever you want to call it.  This is something, budgeted at around $10,000, that James Nyguen actually thinks is amazing cinema.

The complete ineptitude is cause for entertainment for me.

The Room is coming up in a few days for me, so we'll see how that stacks up.

BTW, watching Inferno now, and far from impressed, sorry to say.  We'll see it it picks up and starts to make some semblance of sense.

just finished birdemic (took me 3 nights to get through because i kept falling asleep). regardless, i think I'm in between james and dreamscale. was this movie the worst movie ever made? perhaps. it fails on such a technical level...far more so than the room. i'd probably say that birdemic IS worse than the room. however its not nearly as much fun as the room. birdemic gets old quick. its bad but the same kind of bad throughout. the main characters just keep shooting birds and the same shitty looking cgi is employed again and again and again. plus birdemic does feel like something you'd see on the syfy channel. the room is bad without a bunch of special effects. furthermore the story surrounding the room is much more baffling. i can see why people hate birdemic, but its impossible to hate the room.
