I didn’t really have any expectations going into this movie but I had read all the comics as a kid and enjoyed them so I thought it’ll just be a fun couple of hours with the kids. And it was. Sporadically. My biggest problem with this movie was the amount of talking heads scenes. They just kept coming and coming - talk talk talk. I understand that they sort of had to set up the whole Tintin universe for those who aren’t acquainted with it but come on. Get the ball rolling, Steve.
Another thing this movie lacks (and this is a problem inherited from the comics) is Tintin's lack of character arc. He stays the same the entire movie and that makes him sort of a bland character.
Don’t get me wrong, there were some good action scenes but they weren’t that good. I wasn’t going…Wow!, I was more like…’bout time. The performance capture was top notch though but I don’t understand why they did this in 3D because it wasn’t utilized at all, and it certainly didn’t add anything to the movie.
Nice nod to Hergé in the opening of the movie.
So all in all…meh.

The opening weekend international boxoffice was pretty stout. Grabbed $55 million while only opening in less than half the territories. I think the studios are hoping that worldwide word of mouth will bolster U.S. receipts. It looks like good entertainment, but nothing that will have a long shelf life.
