I don't want to write a long review of this one because I really appreciated not knowing anything about it going in. I do very much want to spread the word about it and recommend it though.
This is a really interesting watch from a writer's point of view. One location, a few characters, shot on DVX-100s with smaller name actors. The final work of Star Trek/Outer Limits writer Jerome Bixby, and starring a number of actors from various Star Trek shows, including Tony Todd (Candyman).
The barest possible description of the plot is this: a professor and his colleagues have gathered for a goodbye get-together on the day of his mysterious departure and the day takes very unexpected turns.
This one's absolutely zero budget, the lighting's not always great, the acting's not always perfect, but it is as hard sci-fi as sci-fi gets, and the ideas are very, very interesting. Jerome Bixby had apparently originally had the idea in the 1960s, though he didn't complete the script as shot until he was on his deathbed in the late 90s.
Uhm...I really shouldn't say anything more. If you're feeling like some neat ideas and you don't mind watching a sci-fi film with zero budget, I'd really highly recommend this one. It's an extremely ambitious film in many ways, and it's very much a "writer's movie," whatever exactly that is. There are certainly missteps and flaws in the film, in my opinion, but it's definitely different than most sci-fi films I've seen.
One last interesting note, especially given our discussion of piracy recently, from Wikipedia:
"In what may be an unprecedented move, the producer of this film, Eric D. Wilkinson,[7] has publicly thanked users of BitTorrent who have distributed the movie without express permission, saying that it has lifted the profile of this product far beyond the financier's expectations,[8] while encouraging fans to purchase the DVD or donate."
I recall seeing this one a ways back. It's an intriguing premise reasonably well executed, given the budget. Not sure if there was enough there for a feature length film. But I was never bored and the character actors brought a lot to the table. And like you, I won't reveal the story's conceit, it's part of the fun!
Hilarious about the producer, obviously, he's not part of the studio system!
Regards, E.D.
