Not impressed...at all.

Very cliche, very predictable, and extremely by the numbers.

How many times do we have to sit through another 90-120 minutes of formula movie making?  Seriously...c'mon.  We've got a bad guy and his henchmen, a good guy and a team he puts together from "misfits" that somehow is able to topple the much better equipped Antags.

The side plot featuring Emma Stone's character falling for Ryan Gossling's character was not necessary IMO, and actually detracted here.

Acting is all fine.  Action is pretty good.  Story...dull.

Not horrible in any way, but oh so unmemorable.

For me, a perfect way to explain what I didn't like here was the big action scene in Chinatown.

Before it even started, I KNEW exactly how it would play out.  So obvious, and sure enough, it was a setup that went down just like the Antags wanted it to.

For me, the entire movie had this feel, including Gossling meeting Stone and the 2 of them literally falling in love immediately.

I actually agree with both posts here, in the sense that I really enjoyed myself when I was watching it, despite being fully aware of the faults mentioned. The formulaic nature of this one was ridiculous, down to the old 'hero resists his calling' classic, of Gosling's character only wanting to get involved once that shoe-shine boy who he, for some weird, unexplained reason, felt protective over.

I also didn't like the sets too much here... the whole thing felt like it was shot in a studio. The Chinatown scene was particularly bad in this respect.

I also hated the corny ending of the main cop throwing away his badge in the ocean. That shit was the cinema equivalent of a block of cheese.

I didn't actually mind the Gosling/ Stone love story, despite Stone's character being one of the most underwritten, offensively simple female characters in the history of cinema. I didn't mind this because of her smoking screen presence in this. I fell in love with her every time she came on screen.

Another thing I didn't like was the weird subplot between the hispanic cop and the old, grizzly veteran. That was so under-explored, it seemed pointless to even include it.

But as I said, despite these flaws, I did actually enjoy the film. I knew it wasn't going to blow me away in terms of storytelling, but it did as I wished it to: it entertained me.

It's a strange thing too because I thought the script was fun.

Not a good movie I'm afraid. My biggest problem was the try hard 60s noir style that Fleischer was trying to achieve, some scenes looked amazing, while others were very cringe worthy.

That specific scene in the police station where the guns were going off, oh wow, did they not get a second opinion on that? Firstly, there was light already in the room and we could see what the characters were doing regardless of the muzzle flashes. So when there finally is a muzzle flash, it's a major WTF because I could see anyway! And then when the flashes do happen, the scene doesn't keep going, it's stops! Like literally, the frame stops when they shoot, very cringe worthy IMO.

And that last fight scene was pretty awkwardly filmed as well. The shots felt really sudden and there was a major problem with the frame rate being too high. It was definitely too swift and apparent that it totally took me out of the moment.

Hahah I thought this one was great. Just some good ol' fashioned crap. Two thumbs up from me.

to be honest, I really loved this movie.  I thought it was badass.

It was the last movie I saw with my uncle before he passed away.

haha I remember the opening sequence with Sean Penn laying into the punching bag, trying to look all badass, and my uncle remarking "Mickey Cohen was a fat little Jew!"

Not terrible, but certainly not recommended by me. Some decent moments, but it suffered from some serious tonal miscalculations. It got caught in the middle of serious and comic and I don't think anyone was really sure. It looked nice and had some potential, but a definite misfire.
