Excuse me if this has discussed or explained, I didn't see it.

What happened to the thread rating system? I know it wasn't used much, but I always liked it. I always thought it was a good way to rate a script, I never understood why people didn't use it that way.

But I'm probably in the minority on this one. I wish the reputation system was back too. Both systems are completely fair if enough people contribute to the ratings.

Boo.  Hiss.  Good riddance, I say.

Half the people who used it were jealous, petty jerks who plunked anonymous single-star ratings onto work that was much, much better than what they could ever hope to accomplish themselves.

I saw it happen to George.  I saw it happen to Phil.  I saw it happen to me.  Nothing worthy of a single star in the bunch, man.  But there it was.

And because of the first half, the second half, who used it appropriately, ceased to matter.

I see. Well, I have to respectfully disagree with Don's decision. The rating system will work if enough people choose to use it.

If a thread gets one 5 star rating, then someone comes along and gives it a one, then naturally it's going to go down. If that happens and you disagree with it, rate it yourself to get it back up. Sure, there's going to be spiteful ratings, but then there are spiteful reviews too.

Getting rid of the rating system because of bad ratings is like getting rid of all review discussions because of a few bad reviews. I think it's another step in trying too hard to not hurt each other's feelings. We all just need to grow up and take the bad with the good.

I dont think bad ratings is what did it, but more of blind ratings, of people who didnt read anything and just gave it one star.  Its like when people post reviews saying "this was really bad, and ugh, it sucked, and yeah"  its unacceptable.

I think...

I think there were more people who gave 1 star ratings for no reason rather than the ones who gave 5 star ratings for reading the work.  I know that when I'm writing a review, that's where my mind is at, I don't even think twice to rate it and if I do decide to rate it, it's after the review is posted.

But obviously someone's work was getting panned so they decided to go around and kill the ratings of quality work.  So what can ya do?  Just write a star rating in your review or something.

Pete,

There wasn't really much of a discussion.  I've been following the rating system for a while now and unfortunately not enough people use it to really be of use.  What generally happens is that either someone posts something absolutly inane and then gives it a five star rating or some give a writer a harsh review and moments later all reviewers scripts suddenly get a one star rating.  Perhaps in a year or so I re-instate the rating system, but for now, I'd much prefer that folks review with words.  The same can be said for the 'reputation' rating system.

Don

I strongly disagree.  For the longest time, 'The Burnout' had a 4.0 or a 4.5 star rating with eight or so votes.  Then, in the course of a week or so, it went down to 1.5 stars.

The best way to tell if a script is good is to read the reviews.  This way, you can blow off a review that reads, 'it sucks,' or 'it rocks,' especially when it's by someone with only one or two reviews.  When someone writes a lengthy critique (whether good or bad), you know that he or she read the work.

I suppose I'm thinking too idealistically. I wish this was a board (hell, a world) where everyone would behave fairly and rationally rather than in a petty and vindictive manner. I guess that's expecting too much.
